US National Gallery of Art is Hiring a Museum Technician (Visitor Experience) Near Washington, DC

Duties

As a Museum Technician, you will:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Gallery floor plans, including layout of collections/exhibitions, restaurants, gift shops and entrances/exits.
  • Keeps informed of the Gallery’s calendar of events, service tools, special events and daily offerings. Demonstrates strong understanding of the neighborhood and other amenities that would benefit both local visitors and tourists from around the world.
  • Checks coats and other personal items in checkrooms. Answers incoming calls to gallery phone lines.
  • Provides access control for general admission and other events or special exhibitions.
  • Reserves passes and event reservations.
  • Assist with data entry and clean-up, preparing museum mailings, training incoming employees, responding to online correspondence.

The position requires standing for extended periods of time, up to 2½ hours without a break; to ascend and descend stairs; to lift visitor bags or packages that may weigh up to 20 lbs; to move sign and rope stanchions for line management; to move service materials, such as a box of maps. Incumbent may screen large items and/or luggage by using an X-Ray machine. Position may require wearing of technology, such as a radio earpiece and/or carrying a portable radio for up to an entire shift.

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1016-5.

For this position, specialized experience is at least 1 year of general experience; general experience is any progressively responsible clerical, office or other work experience that indicates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

  • Knowledge of the National Gallery of Art floor plans, including layout of collections/exhibitions, restaurants, gift shops and entrances/exits; its administrative policies and organization; and its collections.
  • Knowledge of technical tools and systems, including frequent use of tablets, phones, computers for training as well as service and support.
  • Ability to learn and master ticket reservation systems, queuing apps, and related information management tools.
  • Strong understanding of and experience in customer service sufficient to serve as a highly visible front of house gallery representative to the general public.

Experience

General Experience (for positions at GS-4 and below): Experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery, or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling. Other types of experience may also be qualifying if appropriate to the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.
