US National Gallery of Art is Hiring a Mason Near Washington, DC

Duties

The incumbent will:

  • Matches new masonry with existing masonry and finishes to exacting standards. Incumbent works on lifts, scaffolding, and ladders, which the incumbent helps to set up and remove as necessary. Performs other masonry functions such as fastening marble or stonework veneer to the face of a structure using tie wire or anchor holes.
  • Skill in the methods and techniques of cutting, shaping and finishing various kinds of stone and marble.
  • Skill and ability to follow plans, instructions and directions in setting up material, and equipment for assigned work or specialized projects.
  • Sorts stone by size and shape, and lays stone according to masonry principles to obtain strength and a lasting appearance.
  • Skill and ability in the proper and safe use of masonry tools, materials and related equipment. Skill and ability to fabricate and install items in assigned portions of exhibition spaces and areas of the permanent collection.
  • Utilizes a specialized array of cleaning agents to clean marble and stonework. Cleans around works of art, when working in the galleries and other public spaces. Exercises care and extra precaution in performing work near any works of art in order to avoid damage. Chooses approved chemicals and equipment that will not damage any area or art in the area.
  • Sound working knowledge of proper lifting procedures and techniques so as to avoid injury and property damage. Skill, ability and patience to work with extreme care around works of art. Skill and ability to safely erect scaffolds that meet OSHA requirements.
