US Forest Service is Hiring a Biological Science Technician (Plants) Near Rapid, SD

Duties

  • Conduct a variety of field studies of native and non-native botanical species and their habitats.
  • Schedule, organize, and execute botanical projects involving native and/or non-native species.
  • Evaluate data in order to make recommendations for improvement of habitat.
  • Develop plans to collect data for use in habitat and species condition analysis.
  • Collect survey and inventory data to determine species identity, population characteristics, environmental conditions, and factors affecting the vigor and extent of the species and their habitat.
  • Analyze and refine botanical data to develop reports.
  • Resolve common administrative and safety concerns related to projects.
  • Develop techniques, methods, and equipment based on experience, practical knowledge, and prescribed procedures.
  • Use computer systems and associated software for recording, organizing, storing, and analyzing data.
  • Provide detailed reports on work methods, data collected, and project monitoring.
  • Determines need and recommends equipment requirements for botanical projects and assures equipment is operational and available.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
GS-0404-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05. Specialized experience is defined as meeting ALL the following:
  • Performed field work for projects related to vegetation management and botany including taking measurements and recording observations.
  • Assisted with conducting surveys for plants in project areas that included on-the-ground reconnaissance and record examination.
  • Recorded and compiled vegetation and botanical data for use in analysis and reporting.
There is no education supplement for the GS06 position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Work Environment: The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including walking over rough, steep, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending and stooping; reaching; or similar activities. Normal color and stereovision are essential for accurate recognition of various plant species or discolored, injured vegetation.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is not guaranteed.
