US Foreign Agricultural Service is Hiring a Nutritionist Near Washington, DC

Duties

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Serves as a senior advisor providing expert technical backstopping and intellectual leadership for efforts to integrate nutrition considerations into humanitarian assistance and food security strategies and investments.
  • Identifying and promoting best practices in food aid and humanitarian response, early recovery, risk mitigation and reduction, and resilience across Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance’s (BHA) nutrition programming.
  • Advocates for, educates on, and promotes the linkages among agriculture, climate, nutrition, and health in BHA programming to increase the nutritional and health impacts of agricultural interventions.
  • Plans and schedules activities and coordinates program planning with relevant USAID and USDA staff and external partners. As appropriate, identifies and formulates program issues of interest to overall program objectives in the planning process.
  • Provide technical guidance and support in designing, planning, and implementing nutrition considerations into humanitarian programming, especially agriculture and food security investments.
  • Provides expert advice. Maintains rapport with internal and external customers. Develops and establishes working relationships with external organizations.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:
  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
TO QUALIFY AT THE GS-14 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants must have one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-13 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Applying expert knowledge of nutrition concepts, principles, and methodologies to a humanitarian assistance and food security program.
  • Advising on the development and interpretation of nutrition and food aid policies.
  • Collaborating/liaising with food, agriculture, and nutrition experts (both internal and external) to promote cooperation and share best practices.
  • Contributing to program management tasks, such as planning and scheduling; identifying priority issues and objectives; reviewing program goals; and providing technical guidance and support.
Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.

TRANSCRIPTS are required if:
  • This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified.
  • You are qualifying for the position based on education.
  • This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • This is an excepted service, time-limited, term appointment for up to 2 years, with the possibility of extensions. Excepted service positions do not confer eligibility to be non-competitively converted to competitive status.

  • Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expense associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
  • This position may be eligible to telework and/or remote work up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Overseas travel may be required to underdeveloped areas. Some physical hardship may be encountered, such as poor road conditions, unstable political settings, climate extremes, exposure to diseases prevalent in unhealthy environments, and significantly different cultural environments.
