US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is Hiring a Remote IT SPECIALIST

Duties

  • Performs in the capacity of Computer Specialist on projects involving the installation, maintenance, tuning, and troubleshooting of the mainframe operating system software in use at the FDIC. Installs new releases of system software, applies changes that software vendors make, and ensures there is no adverse impact on other applied software.
  • Troubleshoots problems and diagnoses system failures to isolate source of problems in equipment, system software, and applications programs.
  • Develops plans and schedules for hardware and software installation, coordinates actions of vendors, DIT staff, and users.
  • Performs state-of-the-art system programming functions involving evaluation, installation, maintenance and review of software which compliments the operating system, storage management environment and application programs, such as multi-platform interfaces and monitors, on-line program development aids, and storage management utility and monitoring programs.
  • Provides direction and assistance to programmers performing maintenance of on-line systems and resolves technical problems.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Additional qualifications information can be found here.

To qualify, applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the 12 grade level or above in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience 1) Managing projects relating to evaluating, designing, selecting, and implementing of local and/or remote multivendor mainframe and security solutions; 2) analyzing local and/or remote hardware and software; and 3) recommending selection of hardware and software technologies and processes most suited to the requirements of the agency.

Basic Requirements: IT SPECIALIST COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Attention to Detail - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant keeps abreast of latest technology, information, research, etc., to maintain knowledge in field of expertise (for example, reads trade journals, participates in professional/technical associations, maintains credentials).

Customer Service - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant promotes or develops and maintains good working relationships with key individuals or groups.

Oral and Written Communication - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant serves on panels, committees, or task forces as a representative for the organization on technical or professional issues.

Problem Solving - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant monitors current trends or events (for example, technological, economic, political, social, educational, or employment trends or events) and applies the information as appropriate.

There is no substitution of education for the experience for this position.

Additional information

Selectee(s) for this position will be required to report to their duty station office at least 1 day per pay period beginning January 2, 2024, and at their supervisor’s direction to support mission and project needs. In person reporting requirements are expected to increase in July 2024.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Within these categories, candidates eligible for veterans’ preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.

  • Skill in applying a comprehensive knowledge of advanced systems programming and design techniques, operating systems software and hardware, and database and storage management concepts, to-perform functions in highly specialized analytical and technical support functions and projects.
  • Skill in applying a comprehensive knowledge of applications programming techniques and characteristics of existing software to troubleshoot systems, determine failures, and devise recovery procedures.
  • Skill in applying a comprehensive knowledge of data processing concepts and practices and specific software and hardware in use at the Corporation.
  • Skill in applying a knowledge of state-of-the-art software and hardware products in order to perform the most difficult evaluative studies to determine needs and changes and to make recommendations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing the analyses, conclusions and recommendations related to the efforts of the Section and the Division.
