US Commander, Navy Installations is Hiring a Lead Recreation Assistant (Woodworking) - Hickam Arts & Crafts Center Near Honolulu, HI

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists and registers patrons, conducts patron safety briefings, ensuring that training is documented.
  • Collects appropriate fees.
  • Issues materials, tools and equipment.
  • Enforces all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Trains new employees and prepares employee work schedules.
  • Maintains all shop records and files including daily preparation of accounting records; operating Rec-Trac point of sales system; preparing inventory or other required reports, and maintaining inventory of wood or related products for resale.
  • Assists the Director to ensure that equipment and facility meets all regulatory and safety standards and proper maintenance is performed on all equipment.
  • Cleans and lubricates machines, adjusts belts, replaces blades, belts, and/or sandpaper as needed.
  • Fabricates custom woodworking orders.
  • Perfo1ms basic repairs of wooden items.
  • Teaches woodworking machines safety class to qualify new patrons.
  • Solicits contract instructors to teach woodworking classes.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate possess the following:
1. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of a wide range of basic woodworking techniques used to cut, finish, assemble, measure or hold wooden materials to make or repair wooden items.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wide range of woodworking machines, tools, accessories such as lathes, routers, power shapers, and jointers.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of Point of Sales System and computerized inventory control systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to assist, instruct, and work closely and courteously with wood shop patrons.
  • Ability to devise fixtures, templates, and jigs to hold or guide items in the machinery.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
2. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Works under direct supervision of the Arts and Crafts Center Director. Receives assignments through written instructions or oral discussions. Work is assigned during training, i.e. routine operations such as administrative procedures, accounting requirements, inventory control, and carried out daily. All work must meet quality and quantity and timeliness of supervisor and is reviewed formally (annual evaluations) and informally (staff meetings and verbal feedback). The supervisor furnishes advice and guidance on unusual problems or policy matters.
The employee and supervisor mutually define overall program objectives. The employee plans and organizes continuing work assignments independently and sets priorities based on current program requirements. Completed work is evaluated in te1ms of degree to which program objectives and goals are met, appropriateness and conformity to guidelines, and ability to meet customer needs. Performance is evaluated in te1ms of compliance with established procedures and safety measures and effectiveness of the woodworking program.
3. GUIDELINES
Guidelines consist of the Standard Operating Procedures of the Woodshop and A1is and Crafts Center. Performance guidelines are based on work effo1t and initiative, working relationships, productivity, reliability, skill, and leadership qualities. Conditions or circumstances can exist that warrant decisions to be made based on sound judgment and local knowledge.
4. COMPLEXITY
Work consists of performing tasks in an acceptable manner such as directing patrons and training others. Good organizational skills are necessary in order to prioritize tasks needed to be done daily/weekly/monthly.
5. SCOPE AND EFFECT
Incumbent is responsible to provide a woodworking program, following the shop safety rules and regulations, in order to prevent injuries to patrons or staff. Also to provide great customer service, along with a convenient, well-stocked, and well-equipped shop in order to better serve the needs of the military community. The woodshop shall be stocked with a small inventory of wood and a general variety of woodworking tools.
6. PERSONAL CONTACTS
Daily contacts are with customers, subordinates, superiors and coworkers, vendors, and instructors either in person, or via phone or email.
7. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
The purpose of contacts is to provide customer service, communication, evaluation, training, accounting, purchasing, selling, and scheduling for the woodworking shop.
8. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, and arm movement and is sometimes performed in cramped areas, and overhead. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in a hot and dusty environment.
9. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a woodworking machine shop area with no air conditioning. The incumbent is frequently exposed to sawdust, adhesives, and splinters. The incumbent is potentially exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries from accidents while operating woodworking machines. The employee follows numerous safety practices and wears or uses various protective devices such as safety glasses, protective gear devices, safety shoes, gloves and face masks. These devices may be uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods of time as the environment and job dictate. Safety program includes identification of hazards, and safety training.
10. OTHER FACTOR
Hours of work will vary as required by the needs of the program to include rotating shifts, irregular tours of duty including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Position is not telework eligible.
