TITLE: Gerber School Teacher

LOCATION: Gerber School on Cunningham Children’s Home Campus

SUPERVISOR: Gerber School Principal, Assistant Principal

SUPERVISES: Classroom Teaching Assistants

JOB SUMMARY: The classroom teacher is responsible for providing a classroom learning environment that promotes the highest quality of academic instruction, Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) and mental health stability programming possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Assess students’ academic performance through formal and informal testing.
  • Use academic assessment data for instructional decision making and IEP goal planning.
  • Design lesson plans aligned with students’ needs, ability levels, interests, classroom performance, assessment results, district/school curriculum and state standards.
  • Design instruction that is clear, well-organized, and relevant.
  • Plan a variety of appropriate instructional activities to allow for extension and enrichment of the curriculum, including field trips, the use of community resources, visiting speakers, hands-on activities and the use of technology.
  • Maintain a record of lesson plans.
  • Complete behavior progress reports of students on caseload.
  • Calculate academic mid-quarter grades and quarterly grades for students.
  • Report quarterly progress for students on IEP goals.
  • Plan for curricular adaptations as needed for each individual student.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrate ability to implement an effective lesson.
  • Provide for individual differences in learning styles and implement curricular adaptations as needed.
  • Use instructional time effectively.
  • Use techniques which establish and maintain student motivation.
  • Establish a culture for learning.
  • Organize the classroom to encourage learning for all students.
  • Manage student behavior in a constructive manner.
  • Manage organizational procedures.
  • Develop/implement/monitor an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student on the caseload.
  • Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings.
  • Serve as a positive role model in the school environment.
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with USD116 and CCH staff, students, and parents/guardians.
  • Participate in professional growth activities, including scheduled building and district meetings.
  • Demonstrate professional work habits, including modeling responsible, respectful and safe behaviors.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including IEPs and Incident Reports by the timelines established by the Principal.
  • Check email daily.
  • Communicate daily via email with CCH staff regarding students’ daily behaviors.
  • Set up and maintain an effective system of communication with paraeducator(s) in the classroom including use of the Communication and Training Log to document important trainings/communications.
  • Direct, guide, and monitor performance of teaching assistant and communicate any evaluation issues to the Principal.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
  • Participate in quality improvement planning and programming.
  • Monitor assigned students at all times.
  • Model the agency's core values of integrity, respect, teamwork, compassion, excellence, spirituality, (see definition in “Our Core Values”) and accountability in all activities and in interactions with clients, coworkers, and the general public. Initiate and maintain good public relations with neighbors and other community resources.
  • Maintain standards of personal and professional conduct that do not conflict with requirements of regulatory and licensing agencies, and that are not in conflict with the published mission, vision and core values of Cunningham Children’s Home, Child Welfare Code of Ethics and Urbana School District #116.
  • Maintain consistently good attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain strict standards of client confidentiality.
  • Model and support the agency expectations of being respectful, being responsible and being safe.
  • Maintain all training and documentation requirements in accordance with agency and regulatory policies.
  • Know and abide by all policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain certification and physical condition which permits employee to perform physical restraints.
  • Monitor assigned students at all times and intervene as necessary to keep students and staff safe.
  • Report any unusual student behaviors to the Principal.
  • Report any suspected abuse to the DCFS hotline as required by your position as a Mandated Reporter. Inform the Principal when a report has been made.
  • Actively participate in agency, program and/or department quality improvement activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Illinois LBS1 Certificate, must meet highly qualified status

EXPERIENCE

2 years school-based experience preferred

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Highly organized
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent problem-solver
  • Should be able to work with students with a history of behavior or learning problems

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Summer school only position from June 5- July 19 
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM daily with no school on June 19, July 4 and 5

EVALUATION: To be completed by Gerber School Principal or Assistant Principal

START DATE: June 4, 2024

NOTE: This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
