What Our History Department Chair Will Do

Serving as Leader of the History Department

As Leader of the History Team:

  • Set Vision for the History Department for the 2024-2025 School Year
  • Collaborate with the Mentor teacher to manage the coaching of History Department by
    • Conduct classroom observations at a frequency to assess trends in department to plan Professional Development for the Department
    • Conduct coaching cycles with teachers to assess progress on our Teacher Rubric and Progress to goal on yearly Objectives and Key Results (OKR) by
      • Ensure that teachers are well-planned day to day and week to week.
      • Review student work and unit exam data to monitor progress towards end-of-year objectives and key results.
      • Develop pedagogical knowledge and practice through individual and team meetings.
  • Leverage instructional observations,coaching goals and broader instructional priorities to determine Department Meeting Agendas, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Professional Development opportunities within the department all of which are in service of the following:
    • Ensure the curriculum is aligned to the school’s model and goals
    • Ensure that assessments and scopes and sequences are aligned to end-of-year exams and goals.
    • Ensure that lessons are well-planned and aligned with course goals.
  • Leverage the Weekly Data Report, individual courses assessment data and qualitative metrics to track departments progress to goal on OKRs for the year
  • Build a positive team culture aligned to CSH values (in particular, transparency and ownership of the community).
  • Serve as a model of professionalism and a collaborative communitarian mindset to your team

As an Instructor on the History Team:

  • Teach 1-3 classes of history within the department, your classroom often serving as a learning lab for the departmental focus of development or broader instructional leadership priorities
  • Model differentiation across the spectrum of learning for both our students who need an accelerated pace and a more individualized pace
  • Grade coursework in alignment with our mastery based grading ph philosophy
  • Attend the weekly grade wide meeting, department meetings, teacher meetings, etc.
  • In your relationships with students, model building the strong, supportive, warm relationships with students that we value at CSH.
  • Serve as a model of reflective, skilled teacher practice (including constantly seeking to learn and improve).

As a Member of the Instructional Leadership Team

  • Attend weekly instructional leadership meetings to speak to department progress to goals, assess broader instructional trends and partner with other chairs, principal and MD of Curriculum and Instruction to determine broader instructional priorities
  • Partner with additional departments within the school (Academic Support Team -AST, Post Secondary Learning - PSL, etc) to ensure mission alignment and support progress to yearly OKRs
  • Attend the weekly grade wide meeting, department meetings, teacher meetings, etc.

Current Priorities under your leadership in the 2024-2025 School Year:

  • Internalize the History Scope and Sequence as it currently stands for the 2024-2025 school year
  • Prioritize the development of Writing Standards within the History Department
  • Determine the long term trajectory of history course development at Comp Sci High from the 2025-2026 year forward

Qualifications

To be eligible for consideration, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • 5 years of as a history instructor with both quantitative and qualitative data that speaks to your effectiveness
  • 2 year of experience coaching and or leading professional development for history instructors
  • The ability to travel up to 10% of the time
  • Meaningful experience living, working or volunteering in low-income and multiracial communities
  • An instinct for constructive collaboration: active listening, clear communication, empathy, and an ability of work effectively across lines of difference
  • Detail orientation

The most competitive applicants will have:

  • A Masters in Education or History and current New York teacher certification
  • Have taught more than one of the high school history courses to qualitative and quantitative success
  • Experience designing curriculum from scratch and leveraging data to adjust for diverse student needs
  • Meaningful experience in similar organizations or roles, potentially including
  • High performing schools or nonprofit organizations

  • Small teams or start ups

Compensation

Salary: $75,000 - $120,000. We offer very competitive benefits, commensurate with experience, and great opportunities for professional and career development.
