Position Summary

The Coordinator of Student Engagement provides management and planning in the area of student activities, clubs and organizations, student leadership development opportunities, and Peacock Experience (New Student Days). Supervising a Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement and a member of the Department of Student Life, the Coordinator leads programmatic efforts to support the student experience and enhance retention with a focus on building community and fostering a sense of belonging for all students. A collaborative spirit and energetic, enthusiastic personality are necessary for the success of this position. The Coordinator has the option to live in an apartment on campus and receive a meal plan as part of the compensation package.

Position Responsibilities

Student Engagement & Leadership

  • Collaborate across departments and within the community to develop and implement strategies for increasing student involvement and engagement in the University community. Plan, organize, implement, track and evaluate the success of student programming and engagement.
  • Maintain a visible presence with students and serve as the primary contact with student organizations.
  • Implement a comprehensive strategy for the engagement of underrepresented and non-traditional students using innovative and multimodal approaches.
  • Advise the Assistant Vice President and other campus partners on matters concerning students, student organizations, student services and programs, policy development, priorities and resource allocation, and design of a safe, secure, accessible, and inclusive environment promoting students’ academic success, wellbeing, and personal and professional development.
  • Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, advising and/or supervising students and student groups, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges students may be experiencing.
  • Develop programs to encourage commuter and residential student involvement and participation in campus life. Provide opportunities for online and center student participation.
  • Develop, implement, and collaborate with key campus partners on high-level events, programs, and initiatives focused on community building and fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Oversee community service programming for the UIU Community.
  • Identify and organize leadership development opportunities for students.
  • Serve as an advisor for the Peacock Entertainment Crew (PEC) and Greek Life. Oversee events planned by the Student Government, Greek Life and Peacock Entertainment Crew.

Administration

  • Budget oversight. Planning, creation, and management of budgets (Student Activities, Student Leadership, Civic Engagement, Orientation and Outdoor Pursuits) including compiling past expenditures and estimating future costs.
  • Track and asses student engagement at events to include in annual reporting, budget projection, and planning for future events.
  • Review, revise, and enhance all policies and procedures applicable to student organizations and student leadership opportunities for effective and efficient administration.
  • Organize Peacock Experience (PXP) Weekend and Chair the PXP Committee.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students, recruit and train summer orientation assistants SOA’s/Summer RA’s (two of which will be working directly with the Coordinator).
  • Negotiate contracts with vendors for entertainment, food and equipment rental for programs, student activities and special campus events for incoming students.
  • Identify and manage multimodal communications to increase student awareness of events and opportunities.
  • Maintain the leadership center, storage room, and sound room including inventory and control of all equipment, games and supplies.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff including one Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement and a number of work-study students.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, and creative individual with a minimum of one year (two preferred) of proven leadership, planning, and supervisory experience. Supervisory experience would include supervision of staff, budgets, and programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to increased student success through innovative student engagement & leadership programs and practices.
  • Knowledge of: guidelines and compliance requirements for student activities and programs; emerging technologies and internal communication systems used to promote student activities and programs; negotiating contracts with vendors.
  • Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with diverse populations.
  • The Coordinator of Student Engagement must have the availability to work on a basis of “available as work demands” rather than a fixed schedule.
  • Must be eligible for and obtain a Class D Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Event Management/Student Activities experience in a college/university setting.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications specifically Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs; Hometown ticketing; Jenzabar; ability to learn and develop competency in programming/calendar scheduling within operational systems.
