The Upper Adams School District partners with Educational Staffing Services (ESS) for hiring all teacher and classified substitutes. To be considered for substituting, you must apply directly to ESS (use the links below for the position of interest to you). A complete application will be required, and must be fully submitted. When you have completed, and fully submitted your application, ESS will notify you through email of the next steps and how to complete all paperwork required for hire. Certified Teachers and Retired Teachers
Pennsylvania certified teachers can choose which subjects and grade levels they would like to substitute in (teachers with an out of state teaching certificate will be hired as a Guest Teacher - see below). Guest Substitute Teachers
Did you know that you do not need to have a teaching certificate to become a Substitute Teacher? A Guest Teacher is someone who is not a certified teacher, but who does hold a conferred Bachelor's degree. An emergency permit is issued from the PA Department of Education to allow an individual with a Bachelor's degree to substitute teach in school districts. Once you have applied with ESS, they will guide you through the necessary steps for you to become emergency certified with the PA Department of Eduction, and you will be on your way to teaching in a classroom! Teacher Preparation Program Completers and Prospective Teachers (Act 86 of 2016)

Substitute Instructional and Personal Care Assistants
Substitute Instructional Assistants assist the classroom teacher with all students. Substitute Personal Care Assistants work one on one in the classroom with one special needs student. Substitute Nurse Assistants (LPN or RN License required)
Substitute Nurse Assistants can cover for a nurse’s absence or attend field trips to provide services to students. A nurse assistant must be licensed as a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or RN (Registered Nurse). Substitute Clerical Positions
These positions are at each building, and require clerical duties and interaction with students, student family members, and community members.
