The Emergency Departmentis a fast-paced environment where nurses care for patients of all ages from neonates to geriatrics. Nurses must be able to think quickly, multitask, and be able to pivot quickly to the next task since every day is different. Our staff care for trauma patients, life threatening illnesses, such as STEMIs and Strokes, as well as minor illnesses and psychiatric patients. There is a tremendous amount of teamwork and is a great learning environment since the nursing staff works alongside providers and specialists as well as many experienced nurses. The HHED sees about 200 patients a day and the department has many roles to support patient care including RNs, LPNs, Patient Care Technicians, Psych RNs, and Psychiatric Technicians. With the addition of a new Children’s unit at Harrisburg Hospital, there are opportunities to champion pediatric nursing and help develop protocols for our youngest patients. The HHED nurses have several active committees, including practice, education, pride, and quality.
