WS 4 East is a 30-bed inpatient Orthopedic-Surgical Unit. We strive to take care of our patients who are receiving the cutting edge of orthopedic and surgical procedures. We have our specialty certification by the joint commission in both knee/hip and spine. We practice utilizing a RN/LPN/PCT model. Our foundation on this unit is based off of strong teamwork incorporating the mission, vision and values of UPMC. We provide evidence-based quality care to all of our patients. We empower our staff to be collaborative and to continue with their professional development. We also work hard in retaining our nurses as well as recognizing their achievements and the achievements of the unit. Shared governance committee structure is a strong principal in this unit.

Act as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing and competency and able to provide care and IV therapy following UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and policies, and the State Board Regulations The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed UPMC provider. A senior LPN is responsible for seeking opportunities to assist in identification process improvement opportunities to improve patient care. The role of the Senior LPN encompasses partnership, and collaboration with the health care team and the patients and families to achieve desired patient outcomes. The Senior LPN participates in the development, revision and implementation of policies and procedures designed to insure comfort and safety of patients in collaboration with other health care personnel.
