UPMC Hamot is recruiting for an experienced, caring, compassionate nursing assistant with a passion for learning and teamwork to join our team in the CVICU.

This position is full-time with 50/50 day and night shifts. 4 holiday shifts each year and 48 hours of weekend time in every 6-week period required.

The UPMC Hamot CVICU is a 16-bed unit on the second floor of the new patient care tower. Our unit specializes in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery; cardiogenic shock; cardiac arrest and stroke patients. The exceptional care provided in this unit contributes to UPMC Hamot’s certification as a Comprehensive Cardiac Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. CVICU also holds the distinction as a Gold Level Beacon Award of Excellence recipient, representing not only excellence in patient care but also an incredible work environment. 

As a nursing assistant or patient care technician you will work as a team with nurses, providers, and ancillary staff to provide direct and indirect care for critically ill patients.

Just some of the daily tasks you will be responsible for include:

• Checking blood glucose, weights, and vital signs. 
• Monitoring intake and output
• Assisting with mobility
• Assisting with activities of daily living bathing, toileting, feeding, skin care, ambulating, foley care
• Completing EKG and bladder scans
• Clerical tasks such as answering the phone and calling in consults.
• Safely transporting patients
• Delivering and retrieving specimens/products from the lab.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Responsibilities:

• Provides direct patient care under RN direction, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating)
• Maintains patient safety and recovery environment by completing safety checks, cleaning patient rooms, and organizing equipment.
• Acquires and distributes supplies, performs messenger functions, and stocks patient rooms.
• Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
• Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities: ADLs, vital signs, point of care testing, telemetry monitor application, restraint placement/removal, etc.
• Provides diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use.
• Documents in medical records and completes clerical tasks as needed.
• Follows safety policies and procedures, including blood borne pathogen exposure.
• Responds to emergent situations within nursing assistant scope.
• Provides companionship/supervision as required.
• Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Identifies learning needs and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
• Assists in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.
• Reports equipment malfunctions and contributes to department efficiency.
• Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
