UPMC Children’s Hospital is currently hiring a full-time Medical Laboratory Scientist / Expert MLS for the Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy (BMT & CT) Lab. The mission of the BMT Lab is to deliver cellular therapies to our pediatric cancer patients.

This position works at Children’s Hospital in the Lawrenceville area of Pittsburgh. It is a generally Monday through Friday, daylight schedule, but will sometimes include evenings or long days.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist / Expert MLS must be confident and responsible and perform accurate laboratory testing, flow cytometry and processing of an advanced nature to bring bone marrow, stem cell and cord blood transplants to our patients. The BMT Lab uses magnetic bead separation and other procedures in the manufacture of high-quality cellular therapy products intended to treat patients.

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Laboratory Scientist’s salary starts at $25.74/hour.

UPMC is currently offering a generous sign-on bonus for Medical Lab Scientists:

Sign-On Bonus Details:

• $10,000 for a 2-year commitment
• $15,000 for a 3-year commitment

Responsibilities:

• Maintains detailed laboratory documentation of all assays and processes performed as per GDP (good documentation practices) guidelines.
• Participates in laboratory competency assessments and proficiencies as required.
• Performs specialized tasks which may include cellular product manufacture, tissue/blood/apheresis processing and cryopreservation, in-process testing (flow cytometry, viability, ABO/Rh, and endotoxin testing), and transplant at the patient’s bedside.
• Prepare multiple and various routine and non-routine clinical laboratory procedures manually or by utilizing automated and semi-automated equipment including highly sophisticated testing devices.
• Performs research sample testing and compiles results in addition to routine reporting if requested.
• Calculate and analyze assay/test results and quality control information utilizing all relevant information including patient histories, formulas or calculations, or computerized data processing. Investigate abnormal results according to established protocols. Includes interpretation of non-numeric results.
• Implement all quality controls to ensure test validity; adhere to departmental safety standards in responsibly handling, processing and testing specimens and materials.
• Responsible for complex instrument maintenance and adjustment. Calibrate and clean equipment; verify proper function through standardization and controls; troubleshoot and document minor instrumentation problems and repairs.
• Independently perform sample collections, adequacy evaluations and/or infusion procedures as per the operational needs of the host department.
• Orient and instruct fellows, medical students and other allied health care personnel regarding laboratory techniques and methodology and clinical theory, practice, and finding.
• Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.
• Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department temporarily as delegated.
