UPMC is Hiring a Clinician - 5F Medical/Surgical Acute Care Near Pittsburgh, PA

UPMC Mercy is Western Pennsylvania’s only hospital with a combined Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and Comprehensive Burn Center under one roof. UPMC Mercy is also the home of our Rehabilitation Institute, which is one of the of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

We are hiring a full-time Clinician to support our 5F Medical/Surgical Acute Care unit!

5F is a 16-bed Acute Care Unit specializing in transitioning patients both in and out of the acute care environment. Our highly skilled staff have expertise in the admission and discharge process, caring for Emergency Room and PACU patients requiring inpatient admission, as well as patients from the inpatient units and ED/PACU boarders who are being discharged to home, or a rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility. The unit is staffed with highly skilled and proficient healthcare professionals who are committed to providing the best possible care to patients with needs that range from acute care at admission to education and support for those going home. This team works closely with our discharge plan managers creating a comfortable transition for patients and families. This team-based approach provides excellent opportunities for professional development for new and tenured nurses! 

Clinicians work in collaboration with their Unit Director, management, and other caregivers to coordinate clinical activities for each shift, develop and educate staff on the unit, and improve the nursing process. Clinicians inspire superior performance on their unit through example, not only by exhibiting their own expertise in patient care assignments, but also by providing ongoing consultation and education for their team, including in-service demonstrations of new devices, equipment, and policy changes.

As Clinician, you will be a positive force on the unit, a relationship builder who promotes open communication among caregivers and forges connections between colleagues, patients, and patients’ families. You will also directly contribute to a culture of nursing excellence by participating in the selection, training, development, and evaluation of our staff.

The Clinician, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinician is responsible for providing service-based education and clinical expertise for staff including orientation and training, consultation on practice issues and general coordination of clinical activities on a shift basis. They must demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The Clinician also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.   • Demonstrates critical thinking in the analysis of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.

  • Practices solid verbal and written communication skills and can articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices.

  • Ensures patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.

  • Serves as a leader in clinical nursing practice, identifying patient and staff focused opportunities for improvement and leading the change process. Identifies, educates, and supports the psychological and learning needs of staff during change and transition.

  • Practices participatory leadership and is an active member of shared leadership at the unit, facility, or system level.

  • Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following: quality improvement, evidence-based practice, GN or new hire on-boarding.

  • Completes and/or assists with staff performance evaluations for direct reports as applicable.
