UPMC - Pittsburgh Medical Center is Hiring a Patient care technician Near Monroeville, PA

UPMC East in Monroeville Pennsylvania is looking for a Full-Time Lead Patient Care Technician to support the 5E Oncology Unit!

A Lead PCT is one who has a minimum of 3 years of prior PCT experience.

This role will work full-time hours including 3, 12-hour shifts per week with some weekend and holiday requirements. Shift times typically start at either 6 : 00 AM or 6 : 00 PM but can vary.

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are essential partners in our mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity.

They work in patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with the nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay.

Responsibilities :

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team while establishing respectful and interpersonal relationships.
  • Support department-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Care for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace. Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Establish appropriate and effective communication with other departments.
  • Constructively receive feedback and direction and perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.
  • Identify and communicate learning needs to the Unit Director. Participate in self-review as requested by the Unit Director.

Take action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.

  • Provide feedback to the appropriate personnel regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
  • Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the appropriate personnel.
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Provide patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Perform the UPMC Patient Care Technician responsibilities including but not limited to the bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning of patients.

As well as care including blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, simple dressings placements, and Foley care.

  • Contribute to the universal unit activities including but not limited to responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Completes department clerical functions as needed.
  • Assure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
  • Assumes responsibility for assignments and views problems as challenges.
  • Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Shadows potential new staff as needed. Actively participates in the onboarding and precepting of new staff.
  • Actively participates in the scheduling process for the other support staff.
  • Supports department and facility-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Participates in department and facility-based committees.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years of healthcare experience required.
  • Successful completion of PCT Senior training (if not already complete at the time of hire.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training. Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.
  • May, during Patient Care Technician duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.

Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
  • Must have previous Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Technician experience.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances :

  • CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • ACLS preferred.
  • Act 34 and 73 with renewal.
