Job Summary

To assist in providing the highest quality patient care, by supervising Sterile Processing Technicians in the performance of job duties, and performing job duties of the Sterile Processing Technician when staffing shortage or work load require it.

The Sterile Processing shift supervisors responsibilities include, but are not limited to: supervising and instructing Sterile Processing Technicians in the performance of job duties, and daily work area assignments; decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of reusable instruments, utensils, trays, carts, and equipment; assembly of case carts; pick-up and delivery of all reusable items to using areas; monitoring of the sterilization process; assisting Sterile Processing Manager as needed; assisting with performance improvement activities for the department. Provides support, training and communication in accordance with the department of Health, JCAHO, OSHA, CDC, AAMI, and AORN standards and facilities goals and policies. Maintains, supports and coaches employees as necessary for decontamination, processing, assembly and sterilization processes within all set standards and regulations. Evaluates employee job performance and initiates performance counseling as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as a preceptor for new employees.
  • Handle problems as they occur. Manages difficult or emotional customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs; Solicits customer feedback to improve service; Responds to request for service and assistance.
  • Assign daily work schedule for technicians.
  • Monitor work flow, prioritize work, and adjust assignments to accommodate need.
  • Complete monthly performance improvement assignment and staff competency checks.
  • Monitor all processing equipment and notify appropriate repairperson when a malfunction occurs.
  • Effectively communicate with co-workers and all other hospital personnel. Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions.
  • Answer telephone promptly and assist caller with obtaining items needed. Writes clearly and informatively; Present numerical data effectively; Able to read and interpret written information.
  • Assemble supplies and place into case carts for scheduled and non-scheduled procedures.
  • Make rounds throughout the hospital and Brown Cancer Center to deliver sterile and non-sterile instrumentation, supplies and equipment, and to pick-up contaminated or credit instrumentation, supplies and equipment.
  • Deliver scheduled case carts to the Surgery Department.
  • Credit all supply items returned unused and with undamaged packaging.
  • Conserves organizational resources.
  • Decontaminate all reusable instruments, sets, utensils, and equipment used throughout the Medical Center complex.
  • Inspect, assemble, and package all decontaminated reusable instruments, sets, utensils, and other items for sterilization.
  • Operate all processing equipment used within the department.
  • Monitor the sterilization process through mechanical, chemical, and biological indicators.
  • Meets productivity standards; Completes work in a timely manner; Strives to increase productivity; works quickly.
  • Supervises and instructs employees in performing job duties.
  • Completes employee evaluations on time
    Counsels staff on performance issues that arise in the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

High school graduate or equivalent. CRCST and CIS Certification is mandatory. CHL Certification must be obtained within 6 months of taking position.

Experience (required and preferred): Three years previous experience as a sterile processing or surgical tech required. Manual dexterity is required; excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Must display an exceptional level of organizational skills and proficient in problem solving and follow through. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Ability to speak and read English is required.
