Position Description

Position Title: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist - Iowa

Position Reports To: Safety Manager

Job Duties and Accountabilities

Principal Function of the Position:

This position will be responsible for assisting the Corporate EPA and Safety Coordinator in the monitoring and maintaining all programs processes and procedures as they relate to the safety, health, industrial hygiene, and housekeeping for the Iowa facility. Those duties and responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, initiating, administering, monitoring and continuously improving upon established safety, ergonomic and health programs; insuring that employees, supervisors and managers are aware of, and comply with, all federal, state and local guidelines, procedures and protocols relating to the safe and effective operations of equipment, machinery and tools used in the fabrication, manufacture, coating and assembly of products produced in the Iowa Facility. In addition, those safety, health, and housekeeping issues this individual will also be accountable for coordinating, administrating, and monitoring environment, fire safety and security protocols necessary to comply with applicable federal, state and local regulatory agencies, i.e. EPA, OSHA, NIOSH, etc. As part of the responsibilities of this position the individual will be responsible for continuously searching for means and methods to provide a work environment that is healthy, comfortable, safety, and ergonomically friendly.

  • Safety Program:
  • Assists with continually refining all plant safety programs, processes, policies and procedures, and including, safety committee, EMT / First Response assignments and training, CPR certification, Tornado and Fire Training, Blood Borne Pathogen Training, posting of required plant safety, security and signs etc. Ensures regulatory compliance with all governmental agencies including, but not limited to federal and state OSHA & NIOSH and/or other enforcement agencies and notices as required under federal, state and local laws.
  • Coordinates the periodic monitoring and testing various work environment issues such as noise levels, air quality, respirator testing, hearing test, required physical examinations, compliance with Blood Borne Pathogen Stds., maintenance and updating of all MSDS / Employee Right To Know logs and training.
  • Accident Investigations:
  • Conduct thorough investigations of workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses.
  • Compile detailed reports outlining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Audits:
  • Collaborate with the safety team to perform regular safety audits of manufacturing areas.
  • Identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols.
  • Safety Inspections:
  • Conduct routine safety walks throughout the manufacturing facility to observe and address safety concerns.
  • Engage with employees to promote a safety culture and gather feedback.
  • Detail findings and maintain log of actions.
  • Safety Reporting Entry:
  • Maintain accurate records of safety-related incidents and activities through the OSHA 300 log.
  • Input data into safety management systems (PDS).
  • Toolbox Talk Preparation and Distribution:
  • Prepare (and facilitate from time to time) toolbox talks to communicate safety guidelines, best practices, and updates on a monthly basis.
  • Distribute relevant safety materials and resources to all team members.
  • Training and Awareness:
  • Assist in the development and delivery of safety training programs for manufacturing employees.
  • Foster awareness of safety practices through regular communication channels.
  • Facilitate orientation level safety training and company trainings as required (forklift, etc…)
  • Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the EPA/Safety Coordinator, safety team, supervisors, and employees to ensure a proactive approach to safety.
  • Act as a liaison between manufacturing staff and safety management.
  • Emergency Response:
  • Participate in the development and execution of emergency response procedures.
  • Provide support during emergency situations to ensure the safety of all personnel.
  • Environmental tasks:
  • Assists the Corporate EPA/Safety Coordinator, with assigned tasks related to environmental matters such as air quality, storm water, solid waste, waste water treatment, hazardous materials, etc.
Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management or comparable discipline is preferred. Candidates with prior working knowledge of the principal functions of this position would be considered in lieu of specified degree.

Job Requirements and Prerequisites
  • Prior experience in related disciplines described in this job description.
  • Prior working knowledge with plant safety policies, programs and procedures.
  • Prior working knowledge of federal, state and local safety laws and enforcement criteria.
  • Prior working knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws and enforcement criteria.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety with a solid understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough accident investigations and compile detailed reports.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, etc
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and protocols.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and addressing safety concerns.
  • Ability to facilitate safety training sessions.
