General Summary:

General Summary
This position is responsible for managing a staff of FMLA professionals and meeting performance standards established within the operational area or by customer performance guarantees. This manager has routine operational management responsibilities, is considered a subject matter expert, and may be called upon to assist in the implementation of business development activities of the Leave Management Center involving both large case national accounts and mid-market cases. The person in this position is responsible for establishing and expanding partnerships within the company in order to develop and maintain an effective and integrated process. This position serves as the subject matter expert with internal partners, employers, producers, claimants, sales/service and new case implementation to ensure accurate and timely leave administration services and highly responsive level of customer service.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Manages team performance to expectations for service standards for timeliness, accuracy and management of FMLA leaves
  • Accountable for accurate administration of leave management programs and processing of leave’s according to service contract provisions, established procedures, and Federal and State regulations
  • Fosters strong partnership with key internal areas, such as Compliance/Legal, Benefit Consultants, Benefit Client Managers, National Account Managers, Short Term Disability, Quality Assurance, Support Services, Intake/Admin, etc.
  • Ability to analyze and respond to trends at the work unit level
  • Contribute to operating effectiveness through information sharing, reviewing activity reports, continuous analysis of work processes and effective implementation of change
  • Assist in meeting organizational goals through prudent expense management and effective use of headcount and other resources
  • Supports the Director/AVP in developing business plans for the unit and/or department

Customer Management

  • Manage/Facilitate resolution of customer issues
  • Participate in ongoing relationship meetings, act as a subject matter expert to sales, service and customers on leave issues
  • Work effectively with internal partners and customer to enhance service delivery and address unique business needs
  • Ensures Performance Agreement standards are reviewed and achieved
  • Contribute to the acquisition and retention of customers through managing relationships with prospective and inforce customers

People Management

  • Provide strong leadership and direction to a team of specialists whose focus is leave management
  • Accountable for talent development, including selection, retention, performance management and resource development responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a highly motivated staff
  • Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment by ensuring continuous development, training and growth of staff
  • Actively involve team members in setting objectives, creating plans, assigning work and addressing team performance issues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Previous management of a service oriented team is strongly preferred
  • Business background which includes insurance industry experience or management experience in a related industry
  • Relevant insurance designations
  • Able to set direction, monitor performance and initiate and communicate changes in direction as needed
  • Take leadership to ensure employees behave with the highest degree of integrity and fairness and exchange information and ideas useful to others in performing their work
  • Able to make balanced and objective decisions with the highest degree of integrity and fairness where optimal choices are not clear and where there are potential adverse impacts

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ethical, able to maintain confidentiality and be respectful of others

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$75,500.00-$135,900.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
