General Summary:

This position is responsible for the management of the underwriting operations for individual and group life products for Accident and Health, Life and Group products. Directs New Business operations that support acquisition of new sales through traditional and alternative distribution methods. Responsible for building and maintaining relationships between all the various functional areas and the sales organization in positioning individual and group underwriting programs that seek to maximize corporate profitability in conjunction with sustained sales growth. Responsible for day to day operations in underwriting and unit’s workflow, resource management, and underwriting decisions. Drive strategy for underwriting and new business acquisition programs that support all distribution channels within corporate risk tolerance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examine market trends on a continual basis so as to position underwriting programs that balance ease of access for producers with profitability targets.
  • Work in collaboration with other Underwriting management, Legal and Compliance, Finance, Sales Representatives and Field Management in the attainment of top-line and bottom-line growth objectives through sound, focused risk assessment and decision making.
  • Apply broad knowledge of internal and external trends/information to accurately diagnose business strengths and weaknesses, identifying key issues, and developing plans to help drive strategy.
  • Partner with Actuarial and external reinsurance companies to build and maintain profitable reinsurance relationships on all life products. Leverage relationships with reinsurers so as to improve current underwriting practices on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate external audits from reinsurance partners.
  • Support joint product management initiatives with Actuarial and Product Marketing on all individual and group products.
  • Manage the training and technical development of a group of highly professional underwriters.
  • Support the development of an organization focused on high quality risk assessment and management.
  • Make appropriate exceptions, business decisions and management decisions.
  • Ensure that underwriting practices are in compliance with all state regulations. Responsible for all state DOI inquiries and external audits related to life business.
  • Analyze and identify early and ongoing risk trends by partnering with Actuarial and Underwriting Risk Management regarding the performance of the product portfolio.
  • Develop personal credibility with key sales representatives and managers.
  • Support product development initiatives in collaboration with Product Development, Marketing and Actuarial.
  • Enable and motivate employees to make appropriate decisions or recommendations
  • Create/reinforce an environment committed to continuous learning and growth
  • Deliver dependable, accurate and timely service and build relationships with all customers, consistent with the company’s commitment to achieving a distinct competitive advantage.
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

  • College degree preferred and/or significant industry experience
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of insurance fundamentals and practices
  • Must have a sound understanding of both individual and group pricing models and methodology
  • In-depth product knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply concepts to make appropriate business recommendations
  • Professional insurance designation(s) highly desirable
  • Knowledge of insurance fundamentals and some professional insurance designation preferred
  • Mastery of designated product lines including product provisions, plan design, pricing and contractual benefits
  • Demonstrated solid understanding of both top line and bottom line objectives
  • Demonstrated consistency in performance over a sustained period of time; creative problem solving/analytical reasoning skills
  • Knowledge of the sales/distribution process
  • Strong mentoring and coaching skills to assist team members in various stages of career and technical development
  • Proven ability to motivate employees to achieve results
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$114,100.00-$205,400.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
