unm is Hiring a Research Scientist 2 - BEMP Near Albuquerque, NM

The BEMP Ecologist is an integral member in data collection, processing, entry, and checking for all BEMP datasets so that the data are ready to be passed on for analysis and reporting. They are a mentor and educator for students, K-12 and University. They oversee students collecting data in the field and engage them through environmental education activities or lessons relevant to the Middle Rio Grande and riparian systems. The Ecologist also assists students and/or interns in data processing and materials preparation. They collaborate with other BEMP staff to support and participate in BEMP events and work directly with the Science Manager to address field and data needs.
The Biologist/Educator informs, engages, and inspires students of all ages and backgrounds about their bosque ecosystem through classroom, field (outdoor) and/or independent project-based education with the goal of helping to create a new generation of environmental stewards.

General:
● Deliver BEMP’s content rich curriculum about the bosque ecosystem and related ecological concepts to students in elementary, middle. and high schools throughout the Albuquerque metro area during the school year, along with educational outreach during the summer.
● Participate in BEMP’s core community science, fieldwork, and research activities, especially Monthly Monitoring and arthropod pitfall trapping.
● Fully engage in professional development and practice demonstrating a commitment to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity for all BEMP participants, partners, and colleagues.
● Lead, and facilitate BEMP’s educational and field work related to ecology, climate, stormwater science, phenology, endangered species, and more.
● In cooperation with BEMP’s Education Manager/Director, work to align BEMP’s educational curriculum and outreach with Next Generation Science Standards while also leading and developing vibrant and content-rich learning experiences that connect students to their local watershed through developmentally and culturally appropriate student research and community science data collection.
● Manage the safety of and reduce the risk to BEMP participants, especially in field settings.
● Work in a collegial and positive manner with all BEMP partners and staff.
● Active participation in BEMP professional development opportunities, meetings, staff reviews, retreats, tours, events, and other special programs, as needed.
● Support and mentor BEMP college and elementary-high school education interns, as needed.
● Participate in, present to, and build relationships with local, state, and other environmental education, community science, and allied organizations.
● Support grant reporting, assessments, site visits, and related activities for BEMP funding partners including providing timely reports to BEMP’s Education Manager/Director.
● Support BEMP’s main partner organizations, Sevilleta LTER and UNM, with their missions and needs.
● Lead and support curricular programming and student projects to be delivered during BEMP annual events, such as Luquillo-Sevilleta and Crawford Symposiums.
