The University of New Mexico College of Education and Human Services, Department of Teacher Education Educational Leadership and Policy, invites applications for one Lecturer II/III position with a target start date of August 2024 (Academic Year 2024-25). Although the positions may commence as early as August 2024, the positions shall remain open until filled.
The UNM College of Education and Human Sciences, comprised of five academic departments, is a future-oriented, dynamic professional school organized to reflect the following values: Advocacy, Building Professional Identities, Collaboration, Building School/University Partnerships, Diversity and Social Justice, Interdisciplinary Inquiry/Scholarship, and Teaching, Learning and Leadership.
The Teacher Education, Educational Leadership and Policy (TEELP) Department is the largest in the college with the uniqueness of having both undergraduate and graduate education and educational leadership programs that address K-12, administration, leadership and higher education needs together in one academic unit.

New funding from the state of New Mexico and the University of New Mexico, provide a wonderful opportunity to continue growing a cohort of lecturers in teacher education with expertise in social studies education.
Lecturers will teach required licensure courses, such as:
K-8 Social Studies
•EDUC 321/421- Teaching Social Studies K-8

Additionally, courses in clinical practice related to supervision of teacher candidates may be supported by the lecturers. Support and expertise are needed in the department to bolster the licensure experience for our students and to contribute to their preparation in a cohesive teacher education program. The need for faculty who can prepare teachers of diverse student populations is supported by the decision and ruling of Martinez and Yazzie v. the State of New Mexico.

Enrollment in this segment of the department’s curriculum has been increasing over the past five years, and we expect this trend to continue. Additionally, the teacher residency pathways offered by the department require additional course sections in all of our core required courses. The teacher residency programs are a clinically-rich teacher education pathway for licensure offered at the BA and post baccalaureate levels.

The department will best be served by hiring lecturers with the following areas of expertise:
•K-8 Social Studies Education

We welcome strong candidates who are members of protected groups. The department faculty and the search committee are strongly committed to recruiting and giving candidates from protected groups and people of color very serious consideration within the academic parameters of these positions. This position will be advertised in UNM Jobs. We will advertise on the UNMJobs Website, in the Chronicle of Higher Education, national education listservs, including for those with specialized focus (e.g., LGBTQI listserv, Multicultural education listserv, etc.). The position announcement will be distributed on the electronic listserv/bulletins of related teacher organizations across the state and nationally. The position announcement will target groups with members from marginalized populations, minorities, and people of color, and caucuses of national and state professional teacher organizations.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and/or graduate –level teacher education courses in the department. The successful candidates will be expected to assume responsibility of teaching the required licensure classes. Lecturer II/IIIs will hold a 4/4 teaching load and provide 20% of time to service activities in accordance with the department’s approved workload policy.
