Job Summary
Responsible for the development, planning, and implementation of outreach activities and the FLAS Fellowship program for the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and administer Center outreach programs and projects under the direction of the Associate Director, with primary responsibility for organizing and executing visits by speakers, as well as conferences, workshops, weekly brown bag meetings, film screenings and K-12, community, and public events; develop visitor itineraries, conference and workshop agendas, event budgets, publicity or publicity plans, and event schedules in consultation with the Associate Director; provide Center administrative staff with information needed to make all travel and lodging arrangements and develop publicity materials. Work with other area studies personnel and faculty to design, coordinate, staff, and implement joint outreach activities (public and special events). Act as liaison to campus and university outreach community to develop collaborative activities.
  • Develop, initiate, oversee and/or present at CSAMES-related off campus events for K-12, community college, business, and media communities. Liaise with other outreach coordinators at Middle East centers, and represent CSAMES at national outreach initiatives, workshops, and conferences. Support associated advancement projects including collaboration with other area studies personnel and faculty to design, coordinate, staff, and implement joint outreach activities in order to expand the Center’s reach locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Serve as the Center Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) Coordinator; responsibilities include: working in collaboration with IGI Fellowships Coordinator and other NRCs to advertise FLAS awards, plan and conduct FLAS orientations, liaise with IGI on FLAS-related financial matters, arrange for mandatory IRIS pre- and post-FLAS proficiency testing in coordination with faculty, complete all IRIS FLAS reports (including overseas travel requests) in a timely manner to meet DOE deadlines.
  • Contribute to CSAMES communication; collect, organize and disseminate information for CSAMES listservs, website, newsletter, and social media sites. Responsible for the production of the Akhbar newsletter.
  • Participate in CSAMES’ grant writing and grants administration including developing budgets, proposals, data collection, entry and reporting to funding agencies, or other administrative tasks.
  • Assign and review work of graduate student assistants, undergraduate students, interns, and other support staff, under the direction of the Associate director, with primary responsibility for outreach and office operations.
  • Build relationships with constituent communities by attending educational events and community programs and publicizing Center activities.
  • Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the Center.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a humanities, social science, or education field.

A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in educational or outreach programming. (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree; study in a regional language and in Middle East Studies.
Experience in K-12 teaching or programs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in the Middle East region.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
