Job Summary

The Building Maintenance Specialist (BMS) is responsible for responding to and fixing multiple hospital facilities building related issues. One day a week this position works on a weekend day and takes all calls for the entire hospital. The other four days a week, the BMS takes calls related to assigned floors. The BMS responds to all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other specialty system issues. Direct patient care systems like nurse call, TransVac, and the pneumatic tube are also critical systems addressed. The BMS also conducts TJC inspection of items and records the documentation in an appropriate manner.

This is a 1st Shift position, 7:30am - 4:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Experience and Education
  • High school graduation, GED, or vocational school.
  • Four (4) years skilled or journeyman level experience, including at least two (2) years' experience in each of two trades or crafts.
Job Duties
  • Performs plumbing, electrical, welding, mechanical, housekeeping, carpentry, and painting repairs according to service requests for specifically assigned specialties.
  • Inspects plumbing, electrical, mechanical housekeeping, etc. in assigned buildings as scheduled by work order from Management.
  • Maintains records and documents of work completed.
  • Installs new equipment as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Work requires ability to utilize specialized equipment and tools commonly used in laboratory and Animal Resource facility, such as cage washers, automatic water systems, autoclaves, etc. in addition to vibrator analyzer, infrared, detector, oscilloscope, etc. Work requires skill in the use of welding torches and carpentry tools.
  • Work requires proficiency in all phases of duties performed.
  • Work requires alertness and careful attention to avoid serious injury to self and others.
  • Work requires wearing gloves, masks, respirators, hearing protection, face shields, eye protection, and protective clothing.
  • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily in a laboratory, general office, or outside area.
  • Working conditions involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements, such as dust, dirt, heat, moisture, cold conditions, contact with animals, animal odors, lifting, moving heavy equipment, and occasional work where biohazardous, chemicals, or zoonotic diseases will require use of appropriate safety procedures.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
