Job Summary:

This position performs professional sponsored project accounting activities for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Administration, including CALS Research Division and the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station (WAES) units.
The post-award accountant position is a multifaceted role in which daily responsibilities are driven by activities and priorities that arise each day tied to the Rural Partnership Program. The position works with principal investigators, researchers, departments, and centers to monitor and reconcile spending for the Rural Partnership grant at the school/college/divisional level. The accountant serves as the liaison between departments and central campus business units to resolve financial challenges and assist with sponsored project post-award tasks and closeout activities. The selected candidate may interact directly with project sponsors related to detailed financial reporting, invoicing, and/or auditing on behalf of the unit to ensure compliance. The selected candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to cultivate positive relationships.

Responsibilities:Works with researchers, departments, and centers to monitor and reconcile data for sponsored programs at the school/college/divisional level. Reviews and approves financial transactions submitted from departments or centers. May interact directly with project sponsors related to detailed financial reporting, invoicing, and/or auditing on behalf of the unit to ensure compliance.
  • 15% Communicates and ensures financial requirements per federal, state, university, and sponsor regulations are followed on behalf of the school/college or division
  • 25% Ensures the departmental or divisional post-award processing or tasks are done appropriately and timely
  • 10% Reviews and approves financial transactions such as managing fiscal closeout of awards and projects
  • 25% Advises departments or researchers on appropriate post-award modifications and relevant processing
  • 5% Collects or prepares documentation required for compliance or audits on sponsored grants, contracts, or agreements
  • 10% Maintains and analyzes accounting and financial functions associated with USDA 142 Formula funded sponsored projects
  • 10% Manages all UW partnership funding to ensure compliance with terms and conditions of the Rural Partnership award

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
-Working in a financial related field (e.g. Finance, Accounting, Grant Management, Financial Specialist, or other financial related field)
-Managing multiple tasks, planning, establishing priorities, and organizing varied and complex tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
-Demonstrated customer service (e.g., responding to inquiries, providing technical support, transparency, guiding customers through a transaction, follow-up / follow-through, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
-Applying governmental cost accounting principles and standards
-Identifying audit risk expenditures and implementing a corrective plan of action (e.g. seeking approval, cost transfers, etc.)
-Interpreting some of the following: state statutes; federal regulations; administrative rules; university/college/department/center policies and procedures; travel and purchasing policies specific to the State of Wisconsin/UW-System/UW Madison
-Working with UW financial and grant systems (or other comparable higher education platform), software, and applications (e.g., Workday; PeopleSoft system; eRA systems; Huron grant products; Smartsheets; spreadsheets; OneNote; virtual video platforms)

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $60,000 - $74,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:

-This is a grant funded position, and the expected duration of the appointment will be 12/31/2027. However, the appointment may be extended based upon future funding opportunities.
-If the selected candidate is hired at 80%, the position will focus solely on the management of the Rural Partnership Program (and be funded solely by the Rural Partnership grant). If the selected candidate is hired at 100%, the remaining 20% of the position will perform other duties involving sponsored research (and will be funded by a different source).
-A criminal background check will be conducted on the selected candidate.
-A one-year evaluation period will be required.
-The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment.
-University sponsorship is not available for this position.
