The Freedman Lab in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, is seeking a Research Scientist (Research Scientist/Engineer 3 (E S UAW RSE)) to lead projects using human pluripotent stem cells to develop new treatments for kidney disease, under the general guidance/supervision of Associate Professor Benjamin Freedman. The Research Scientist will combine stem cell culture and differentiation with bioengineering, microfluidics, and pre-clinical animal models to build next-generation models of human kidney regeneration and disease. This position will be responsible for contributing to preparation of reports, papers, presentations and new proposals. He/she will contribute to positive colleague and investigator relationships through interactions on current grants. The successful applicant will also assist Dr. Freedman with mentoring of trainees. Experience with animals is a plus.

This position will be located at South Lake Union campus of UW Medicine, a bastion of stem cell research in the innovative center of Seattle. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, reliable, highly organized, possess a high degree of accountability for quality of work performed, can work independently and has excellent technical skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Experimental duties include: 60%

Animal work - husbandry, injection, analysis and surgery relevant to kidneys

Cell culture - daily differentiation and maintenance of human pluripotent stem cells

Microscopy - immunofluorescence, confocal, wide-field, live cell

Microfluidics - bioengineering, device preparation, input/output bioanalysis

Genome editing - guide RNA construction, transfection, screening

Drug discovery - design and execution of high throughput screening assays

Biochemistry and molecular biology - qPCR, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, cloning

Computing and analysis - Illustrator, Powerpoint, Excel, Word, ImageJ, HTML

Documentation - daily record of work performed in files and laboratory notebook

Lab duties: 20%

Mentor research trainees and undergraduates; contribute to improvements in efficiency

Orient/train new staff

Manage projects of moderate size and scope

Assemble and organize research teams

Lead projects or project tasks toward research objectives

Inventory management for reagents/orders/cells; track expenses

Ensure compliance with lab regulations and completion of corresponding paperwork

Scholarship: 10%

Contribute data and ideas for new projects

Drafting of new grants with minimal supervision

Preparation of primary research manuscripts with minimal supervision

Writing invited manuscripts

Assist in seeking/acquiring additional funding

Manage relationships with grants sponsors and progress reports

Animal care includes: 10%

Data collection/maintenance management for rodent colony

Updating and ensuring compliance with animal welfare protocols

Oversight of junior trainees working in the animal facility

Demonstration and training of surgeries

Developing new animal protocols

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in biology, bioengineering, biophysics or related field and at least four years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Cell culture skills and experience; strong computer skills including Excel, statistical and/or graphical software (ex. Adobe Illustrator, ImageJ, Powerpoint); excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to manage diverse tasks; flexibility in work hours; a thirst for scientific knowledge and progress; comfort working with animal model; and a high degree of integrity.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with human pluripotent stem cells, high throughput screening, genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9), or rodent microsurgery.
