CICOES is hiring for a highly skilled ocean engineer to support a variety of existing EDD programs including floats, buoys, autonomous surface and underwater instruments at NOAA.
NOAA’S Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), on the shores of Lake Washington in the Sandpoint neighborhood, is a world leader in oceanographic and atmospheric observations and research. Our team of engineers, technicians, and machinists design and build innovative and application oriented platform and instrumentation for ocean, fisheries, and atmospheric monitoring and research programs.
Scope of Position:
The incumbent engineer works closely with senior engineers and scientists conducting interdisciplinary oceanographic and atmospheric research in the areas of assistance to weather and climate prediction and assessment of environmental change, building sustainable U.S. fisheries, and advancing short-term warning services. As part of a research team, the incumbent evaluates and applies common or novel scientific and engineering techniques to the design of various types of advanced marine and atmospheric instrumentation. The employee is expected to seek continual improvement of work practices and developing equipment in order to advance the current state of technology. Demonstrated initiative and independence is a key character of the successful applicant.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
30% Design mechanical components and systems for ocean research applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, and heat transfer.
20% Produce quality assembly, exploded assembly, and BOM documents with revision control.
25% Develop mechanical and electromechanical components.
10% Assure system quality by designing a project plan, testing methods, testing finished system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
10% Write test reports and SOP documents, and conduct analysis of lab test data.
5% Work at sea on research ships.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of a BS degree or higher in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering with 4 or more years’ experience in a related area, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Designing mechanical components and systems for ocean research applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, and heat transfer are the mainstay of this position. Thorough knowledge of material properties and corrosion are desired.
• Possess excellent Solidworks CAD documentation skills to produce quality assembly, exploded assembly and BOM documents with revision control.
• Develops mechanical and electromechanical components by studying scientific requirements; researching manufacturing methods and COTS products for timely program completion.
• Assures system quality by designing a project plan, testing methods, testing finished system capabilities, and confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
• Ability to travel and work at sea on research ships for up to 4 weeks per year.
DESIRED:
• Technical documentation skills are needed to write test reports and SOP documents in MS Word. Analysis of lab test data using Excel is desirable.
• Experience in a machine shop environment is highly desired. Cleanliness, attention to surface finishes and detail are critical in successful designs.
