Job Description:

TITLE: Point of Care Testing Coordinator

JOB OVERVIEW: Coordinates all Point of Care Testing activities throughout Valley Medical Center Hospital and Clinics. Duties include implementation, education, training and monitoring of all bedside or remote testing performed by non-laboratory personnel. The Point of Care Testing Coordinator prepares for and maintains compliance with all federal, state and laboratory accreditation standards.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Laboratory

HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or as needed to meet departmental needs.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Laboratory Services Director

PREREQUISITES:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited Medical Technology or related science program with certification as a MT(ASCP), CLS (NCA) or equivalent with 3 years' clinical lab experience

Or,

Classification as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist with certification as a MT(ASCP), CLS (NCA) or equivalent with 5 years' clinical laboratory experience.

Point of Care experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Possesses excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Demonstrated effective leadership in working with multi-disciplinary staff.

Demonstrated collaborative, team approach to quality improvement and problem solving.

Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel and experience with Laboratory Computers.

Knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures is essential.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Unique Job Functions:

Establishes, revises and monitors policies and procedures for the Point of Care (POC) Testing program.

Ensures POC testing policies and procedures complies with all federal, state and laboratory accreditation standards.

Assures ongoing readiness of POC testing sites throughout the system for TJC, CAP, and other inspections.

Ensures that required training and competency for testing personnel for waived POC tests are completed.

Develop and direct training and competency for moderate complexity tests.

Provides education to non-laboratory staff as needed on test procedures.

Assesses technology and methods for POC testing applications. Reviews requests for additional POC applications and recommends actions to the Medical Director, Lab Director, and site Managers

Performs validation and correlation studies on all point of care testing devices per established protocols.

Monitor Quality Assurance activities, compiles all data into a monthly report reviewed by the Lab Medical Director and Lab Management.

Evaluates the effectiveness of quality assurance program annually and provides a written summary of findings.

Identify opportunities for process improvement for all POC testing.

Ensures that system POC operations at all sites are continually assessed for quality and that, if necessary, changes are made to meet hospital and departmental targets/goals.

Monitor data systems and equipment used in POC are in working order. Interacting with system analysts and vendors as needed.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action per established protocols.

Coordinates proficiency testing and ensures they are performed in accordance to regulatory standards.

Ensures quality control and maintenance data from all POC testing sites meet established procedures and protocols.

Ensures that an accurate roster of all staff performing POC testing in the hospitals is maintained

Participates, as requested in intra-department meetings and task group.
