The Associate Director of Development for the Social Sciences works with the Director of Development for the Social Sciences, the Executive Director of Development, academic leaders, department chairs and faculty, volunteers, and other advancement staff to actively identify potential donors, cultivate and nurture positive external relationships, and solicit major gifts of $50,000 or more to support private funding initiatives. This position will have a fundraising focus on the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Frontline Fundraising (100%)
The Associate Director is primarily charged with identifying, cultivating, soliciting, negotiating, and stewarding major gifts starting at $50,000. Most of the Associate Director’s time is focused on gifts from individuals; however, the position also may require interaction with corporation and foundation entities.
Manage a portfolio of 100-125 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 or above.
Make at least 75 substantive contacts each year with those prospects in their portfolio. Identify major gift prospects. Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospect. In addition, conduct ongoing qualification contacts each year.
Solicit a minimum of 10-12 major gifts each year.
Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure major gifts. Participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management and tracking system.
Proactively reach out to qualify leads through cold calls and emails making a minimum of 60 new contacts each year. Identify engagement opportunities for these new relationships.
Work with the Director of Development for the Social Sciences to develop gift strategies to engage cold relationships and move them through the donor commitment continuum to a gift conversation.
Coordinate the participation of administrators, academic leaders, volunteers and advancement staff in major gift fundraising activities.
In consultation with the Director of Development for the Social Sciences, establish personal goals, objectives and strategies for major gift fundraising. Participate in assessing progress toward goals.
Work cooperatively with staff in the Principal Giving, Regional Giving, Planned Giving and Corporate and Foundation Relations in preparing solicitation strategies for assigned prospects in portfolio.
Support the Executive Director of Development, Social Sciences Divisional Dean and volunteer leaders in their advancement efforts on behalf of the College.
Seek appropriate training opportunities, including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift solicitation techniques.
Provide major gift fundraising training opportunities for advancement staff, academic leaders and volunteers.
Submit regular reports to the Director of Development for the Social Sciences.
Other duties assigned by the Director of Development for the Social Sciences.

Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Equivalent development/advancement experience outside of higher education may substitute for educational institution experience. Documented fundraising success in previous positions required.
Proficiency using PC computers. Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong relationships with donors and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust with while aligning the donor’s passions and goals with the institution.
Intrinsically motivated and able to create innovative ideas to achieve results. Recognizes and seizes opportunities.
Ability to develop fundraising strategies and plans that integrate into the organization’s mission, priorities and goals both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Conditions of Employment
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
Frequent local travel expected.
