The WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH) has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Simulation Technician.
Healthcare simulation is a compelling and expanding new field of education combining engineering, technology, medical science, art, theatre, psychology, and human behavior to improve patient outcomes through high-quality training. Since its establishment in 2005, the WISH program has become a national leader in the advancement of healthcare education using innovative technology and methodologies, giving healthcare providers and trainees a safe environment for hands-on learning and practice. As a Lead Simulation Technician for the WISH program, you support the development and delivery of these educational activities. We are seeking an individual who will bring their creativity, flexibility, problem-solving abilities, and enthusiasm to advancing the educational mission of WISH, the Department, and the University.
WISH Lead Simulation Technicians, are members of a collaborative team of simulation specialists, working closely with the Simulation Site Manager, faculty, and other members of the Division of Healthcare Simulation Science to provide onsite coordination for simulation-based educational and research activities across the UWMC WISH locations (HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-Northwest).
The Lead Simulation Technician serves a pivotal role as simulation lead/mentor for the WISH program. The position works in support of the WISH Simulation Site Manager to execute key simulation lab duties, including planning and coordination of program details, course review and documentation, and operation of simulation technologies for WISH educational activities. In addition, this position serves in a mentorship capacity to more junior personnel in the simulation lab, before, during, and after simulation exercises, helping them to learn and navigate healthcare simulation education activities.
This position may participate in various simulation-related research projects by assisting with the collection, summary, and reporting of data, through various means (simulation equipment, video-capture, WISHTrak data, performance checklists, etc.).
Under general supervision by the Associate Director and with input from WISH Simulation Site Managers (HMC and UWMC Montlake/NW), this position assists with lab operations, course scheduling, and program advancement. The Lead Simulation Technician is expected to independently review resourcing, equipment, and supply needs for WISH activities, and coordinate transport of material between sites as well as recommend items for purchase/procurement.
The major aspects of this position fall into the following three categories:
  • Operating/assisting with WISH simulations, including cadaveric courses (60%)
  • Course/Curriculum Development, Documentation, & Data Management (20%)
  • Outreach and Event Coordination (20%)
    A successful candidate will be a key simulation resource dedicated to superior service for all internal and external customers, and committed to excellence, with a primary focus on quality, planning and organization, teamwork, and equity, diversity, and inclusion activities. This position is overtime eligible and requires availability for occasional staffing outside of business hours. Such events are pre-scheduled and offered on a rotational basis amongst all WISH technicians.
    POSITION PURPOSE
    The WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH) has at its core, a mission to improve the health of the public through simulation science. This wide-reaching program is part of the Division for Healthcare Simulation Science within the Department of Surgery.
    WISH interfaces with over 30 departments across the UW Medicine enterprise and this position plays a significant role in the successful execution of interdepartmental endeavors such as the hundreds of courses that occur annually at WISH. With a mission to improve the health of the public through simulation science, a substantial portion of the WISH program is its teaching mission. The expanding program reaches across the WWAMI region to train residents, medical students, allied health professionals, and practicing physicians.
    The program, housed within the Department of Surgery, is a multi-disciplinary School of Medicine initiative and exists to provide cognitive and skills training and assessment for residents, medical students, faculty, and the larger medical community.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A Bachelor's Degree with major study in a basic applied science.
  • Two years of full-time experience as a Scientific Instructional Technician or equivalent OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum of six (6) monthsÂ’ experience in a simulation environment.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    In addition to the Core Competencies (see above), the successful candidate exhibits:
  • Ability to work autonomously in a complex and fast-moving environment with only general oversight.
  • Strong organizational skill in order to document, track, and report on the status of multiple projects.
  • Must be able to work in a shared lab environment.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be able to travel regularly between WISH sites as needed, throughout the greater Seattle area (UWMC-ML and UWMC-NW, with occasional assignment at HMC).
  • The position requires handling and preparation of biological specimen for educational activities.
  • Successful candidates should be open to working with, and in an environment that utilizes biological tissue and cadaveric specimen for education.
  • WISH educational activities often use audio/visual technology and high-tech simulation-based equipment, a successful candidate should be familiar and comfortable with learning and implementing new technologies.
  • Course activities often necessitate the movement and positioning of equipment.
  • The physicality of this position requires the ability to regularly transport equipment between training locations.
  • The position calls for safe carrying of ~40lbs, maneuvering within tight spaces, and occasional ladder use.
  • This position may have infrequent or limited options for telework flexibility for specific projects, but regularly necessitates an onsite presence, and must be able to regularly travel between all WISH locations (UWMC-NW, UWMC-ML, HMC), as needed to support operations.
