Department of Medicine: IT has an outstanding opportunity for IT Backup and Support Engineer.
Under the general supervision of the Director of IT Services and the IT Support Manager, the IT Backup and Support Engineer will be responsible for the management of backup and storage systems, Windows servers, virtualization, and cloud technologies. Additional responsibilities will include workstation and application support for all Microsoft supported versions of Windows (10 ), as well as Apple supported versions of macOS (11 to 14), in an Active Directory environment. Support duties will include network connectivity troubleshooting, printer installation and configuration, software installation and troubleshooting, AD account management, Exchange mailbox and user support, software support (all Microsoft supported versions of Office, Acrobat, Citrix, etc.), VPN remote access user configuration and support, and special projects as assigned.
This position reports to the IT Support Manager for all helpdesk related tasks.
This position reports to the Director of IT Services for all infrastructure related tasks.
The Department of Medicine is consistently recognized as one of the best departments in the nation by many measures. It is the leader in primary care and subspecialty medicine education, a preeminent provider of health care in the Pacific Northwest and one of the nation's most prominent centers of basic and clinical research in Medicine. The Department of Medicine is the largest Department in the University of Washington with an annual budget of approximately $500,000,000 and approximately 3,200 faculty and staff.
The IT Backup and Support Engineer is a primary resource for supporting a complex organization of educational, research and clinical programs throughout the entire Department. The IT Backup and Support Engineer implements and continually improves the services of the divisions that have become an integral part of the Department’s success. The IT Backup and Support Engineer will be responsible for providing best practice support for end users, while helping to ensure that the services provided are compliant with all UWMC Policies. The network establishes connectivity throughout a widely dispersed Department, and forms a solid foundation for an environment where information and data can be centralized and shared between faculty and staff in a timely and efficient manner. It is the primary responsibility of the IT Backup and Support Engineer to manage the day-to-day operations and health of data backup systems, servers, and firewalls that support the ongoing functions of the Department and all the divisions. Secondary responsibilities include support of workstations, peripherals, network connections, software applications and end users.
Technology is the key to the day-to-day operations and efficiency of the Department. Two of the strategic initiatives for the Department of Medicine rely heavily on technology: the Clinical Activity Database and the Financial Database. Without technical expertise these initiatives would be difficult to implement. The benefits of these systems are also being shared with other Departments within the School of Medicine.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Backup System Administration and Management
The IT Backup and Support Engineer is responsible for the management of DOM IT’s backup infrastructure. These responsibilities include:
• Design, develop, implement, and maintain a robust network backup system to support regular end-user file restoration, system/application recovery, and disaster recovery with the oversight of the Network and Security Administrators.
• Utilize backup technologies to implement application-aware backup solutions. Specific applications include Windows file servers, Exchange, SharePoint Services, SQL Server, Active Directory, etc.
• Exchange rotating backup media on an ongoing basis, ensuring offline media are safely and securely stored off-site.
• Monitor the status of backup jobs and datastores on backup systems to ensure the ongoing success of backup jobs.
• Develop backup best practices for self-service groups, such as research lab, research, and clinical groups.
• Consult with self-service groups to advise on the importance of reliable, tested backups to safeguard against data loss from incidental deletion, internal bad actors, data corruption/hardware failure, and outsider threats/ransomware. Work with these groups to develop and guide implementation of such backup systems.
• Continually research emerging technologies for providing effective backups and use this knowledge during the development of next-generation backup systems.
• Develop backup schedules to ensure effective point-in-time recovery points and minimize performance impacts on production systems.
• Test backup systems according to defined policies and document results to ensure the effectiveness of recovery efforts.
• Develop backup system metrics for disaster recovery planning efforts.
• Develop comprehensive documentation for backup infrastructure and processes.
Direct User Support and Training / Policies and Procedures Management
The IT Backup and Support Engineer is responsible for directing and supporting the faculty and staff in their use of the computer system at UWMC, HMC, VA, SLU and other facilities supported by the Department of Medicine IT Services and remote environments. The IS Help Desk task responsibilities include:
• Regular consultation with the Director of IT Services and the IT Support Manager on various related subjects.
• Network/Desktop applications installation, configuration, and management.
• Oversight, mentoring, training and task assignments of the student support staff and IT Support Manager.
• Mentor and train end users on the use of Microsoft office applications, printers, and workstation network connectivity.
• Support of Audio/Visual meeting events for the Department of Medicine.
• Support subject matter experts and outside consultants with the development of web and network-based applications related to the Department’s academic, research and clinical activities.
• Assist the Director of IT Services and the IT Support Manager with the implementation and enforcement of Departmental Policies and Procedures.
• Assist with the development, administration, maintenance, and support of the Department’s internal and external web sites, as well as related web applications.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve operational problems related to the web sites and the software used to maintain them.
• Assist in the integration and development of web-based and interactive multimedia curricular materials.
• Collaborate with the network administrators and consultants on design issues related to web and network-based applications, such as multi-user databases, etc.
• Configure and operate department equipment for multimedia applications.
• Assist the network administrators on issues regarding network and troubleshooting related to end user connectivity issues.
• Collaborate with the Director of IT Services and/or IT Support Manager concerning the training needs of all Information Systems and Support Staff.
• Email spam filter maintenance and reporting
• Support user access from remote sites using remote access tools such as a SSLVPN client and Remote Desktop Connection.
Systems Administration
The IT Backup and Support Engineer is responsible for implementing and maintaining an information systems strategy that supports the Department of Medicine goals and objectives. Systems administration responsibilities include:
• Review, implement, and maintain security standards for client workstations, peripherals, and servers.
• Assist the IT Support Manager in conducting and verifying successful hardware and software inventory.
• Assist the Director of IT Services and/or IT Support Manager with the maintenance and accuracy of Active Directory user and equipment information.
• SQL Server security and permissions administration for end users.
• Exchange security and permissions administration for end users.
• Terminal Server security configuration and administration for end users.
• Assist in the development, maintenance and distribution of automated Server and Workstation update patches.
• General equipment Inventory Control administration and reporting.
Other Duties and Project Work
• Perform other duties and ad hoc projects as assigned.
• Self-paced learning for all new technologies that the Department of Medicine IT Services department decides to support
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field AND a minimum of 3 years’ experience performing progressively more complex and responsible tasks including support of computer systems, end users, Active Directory and Windows Servers or equivalent on the job experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Demonstrated a strong knowledge of Microsoft desktop and server OS & familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated a strong knowledge of Apple macOS & familiarity with macOS versions of Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated knowledge network administration and troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of networked desktop computing in a Windows environment.
• Experience in a complex computing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for academic, instructional, business and research needs while working within the constraints of the current IT Budget.
• Demonstrated experience with Configuration Manager functions such as image deployment, task sequences, equipment and software inventory, custom reports, and queries.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze Windows server event logs
• Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Hyper-V
• Demonstrated experience with running Data Protection Manager, Veeam, cloud backup and storage technologies, and tape libraries.
• Experience with Microsoft Active Directory services
• Experience in policy and procedure implementation and enforcement using Active Directory Group Policy.
• Experience with PowerShell commands, syntax, and use in scripting
DESIRED:
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience working within higher-ed IT environments and working with IT security policies for medical institutions.
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience managing complex backup systems and technologies.
• Familiar with the principles of Information Security and system logging.
• Knowledge of SharePoint Administration and the SharePoint environment.
• Experience with software installation, configuration and maintenance in a multi-server, distributed computing environment.
• Experience with installing and troubleshooting hardware for servers and workstations.
• Experience installing and troubleshooting Windows and Macintosh workstations.
• Management and administrative skills to include experience with vendors, providing hardware/software consultation and recommendations, and inventory control.
• Experience providing system's documentation and implementing system policies and procedures
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Available and willing to work off-hours and weekends as needed.
• Available and willing to work late nights to support maintenance window events as needed.
