POSITION TITLE: Health Care Data Analyst

JOB SUMMARY: This position will be responsible for coordinating efforts among quality management support staff to produce data-based work product analyzed in accordance with bio-statistical principles and methods; creating related presentations for use by hospital and medical staff leaders,and serving as an "interpreter" between Information Technology and clinical staff when it comes to problem-solving technical issues.

ASSIGNMENT AREA: Outcomes Management

HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday, 0800-1630 with requirements for flexible hours.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director Patient Safety & Quality

PRE-REQUISITES:

Associate degree in health care field required, preferably in Health Information Management, a clinical field or healthcare informatics. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Minimum 2 years recent employment in acute health care setting.

Experience in use of electronic health record (EHR).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Thorough knowledge of MS Office Suite; particularly Excel/QI Macros, Access and PowerPoint.

Knowledge of research methodology, principles, procedures, and bio-statistical analyses.

Knowledge of data management and basic coding.

Ability to design, implement and maintain systems necessary to retrieve, analyze, report, and file data; skilled in graphic development and presentation.

Thorough knowledge of describing data, testing hypotheses and examining relationships among variables.

Proficiency in use of Excel's Analysis Tool Kit and QI Macros or equivalent statistical analysis software.

Ability to generate reports from various software programs and databases, using quantitative and qualitative data in performance measurement and improvement.

Ability to deliver effective written and oral reports and presentations.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of data and information as required.

Requires planning, organizing and working on multiple tasks at one time.

Requires deep concentration for a large volume of work that must be completed within a limited period of time to meet deadlines for reporting.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILIES:

B. Essential Responsibilities and Competencies:

Support the organization-wide quality management, patient safety and performance improvement program through retrieval, analysis and reporting of data internally and externally in accordance with regulatory requirements and organization-wide standards.

Produce reports and information as requested within established time frames.

Develop and maintain competency in clinical decision support systems (including but not limited to Truven's CareDiscovery Transform and Quality Measures, Quality-Net Exchange).

Identify and report variations in clinical care that require immediate follow-through.

Utilize various software applications for data collection, analysis and reporting.

Participate in the discussion of study design and data elements and make recommendations to fulfill the scope and objectives of the study.

Coordinate and support efforts of quality management, infection control, and clinical staff to complete data collection and reports in accordance with intent (validity and reliability) and timelines.

Create interactive (drop-down menu) databases to facilitate accuracy of abstractors with repetitive data entry and analysis.

Analyze, report, and interpret data results, utilizing performance improvement tools and techniques such as graphs, run charts, control charts, and statistical process control in performance improvement reports to Patient Care Services, Medical Staff Departments and Administration.

Apply bio-statistical analyses for physician peer review and reappointment profiling.

Prepare PowerPoint slides for administrative and physician presentation to quality committees and licensing/accrediting bodies.

Provide comparative data for PI teams to identify best practices; keep staff and committees aware of publicly reported data reports.

Troubleshoot technical issues between Outcomes Management and liaisons to various software programs used.

Resolve data conflicts and maintain integrity of databases.

Function as a technical resource for others who use the same software systems and databases (e.g. Truven: CareDiscovery Quality Measures and Transform; Q-Net; Leapfrog, Excel).

Function as a resource person to physicians, leadership, and staff in the analysis and interpretation of internal and external data and reports (e.g. NDNQI).
