DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Football Performance Nutrition is responsible for developing and supporting the overall nutritional needs and requirements of a championship level college football program. This position will work directly with the Head Football Coach, the Associate Athletic Director for Health and Wellness, the Head Football Athletic Trainer, and the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Football, to perform the following:
  • Educate football student-athletes, coaches, and peers on how to optimize health and athletic performance through effective dietary habits.
  • Evaluate and assess the dietary practices of football intercollegiate student-athletes. Provide individualized nutrition plans to promote the achievement of short-term and long-term goals for athletic performance and optimal health.
  • Educate football student-athletes, coaches, and support staff in lifestyle nutrition skills, including but not limited to, proper food selection strategies in the grocery store, food storage, pre-game menu choices, during-game fuel choices, post-game/practice fuel choices, etc.
  • Evaluate and assess body composition and lead the education of football student-athletes and coaches regarding body composition as it relates to optimizing health and athletic performance at various points throughout the year for all football student-athletes.
  • Conduct additional physiological testing as indicated/requested, including hydration testing with urine specific gravity (USG) and sweat rate testing.
  • Provide personal and customized nutrition programming based on individual assessments of football student-athletes that takes into account position played, body composition goals, health history, and any other factors that impact health, wellness, and competitive performance.
  • Conduct individual medical nutrition therapy for diagnosis such as Ulcerative colitis, Inflammatory bowel disease, Type 1 diabetes, stress fractures/bone health, Celiac disease and other severe food allergies, body composition management and interventions, and eating disorders/disordered eating.
  • Serve, as needed, as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team (CARE team) for the football program and work closely with mental health professionals, team physicians, and athletic trainers on issues specific to football student-athletes with eating disorders or disordered eating habits and other diet influenced medical conditions.
  • Responsible the ordering and inventory of selected food items; the recruiting, hiring, scheduling, and mentoring of hourly employees, interns, and volunteers; supervision of and the planning and delivery of customized snacks for football student-athletes.
  • Serve as an expert resource for the football team for year-round menu planning, pre/post-game menu planning, and planning with hotel catering departments and restaurants for both home and away events.
  • Collaborate as needed with Director of Performance Nutrition and University of Washington Housing and Food Services staff to develop performance-based menus for student-athletes at Conibear Training Table.
  • Work with football student athletes, coaches, and support staff to provide education on dietary supplements, taking into consideration the many facets of nutrition supplements, including drug-nutrient interactions, NCAA guidelines, and the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements.
  • Assist team physicians in recommendations of vitamins, minerals, and supplements for football student-athletes that have medical indications.
  • Attend training table meals to provide nutrition coaching for football student-athletes during meal service.
  • Perform other related duties for the football program, coaches, staff, and student-athletes as required.
  • This position requires compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
    Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington, and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition Sciences or Dietetics. A minimum of 3 years of experience working in nutritional counseling with an emphasis on sports nutrition. Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements with respect to NCAA and WADA guidelines. Demonstrated competence in nutrient analysis and meal planning. Maintain a Washington State Food Worker Card and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of safe food service practices. Must possess knowledge of signs and symptoms of eating disorder/disordered eating and be able to make recommendations to the CARE team and the student athlete. Possess a comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy and therapeutic diet planning and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team. Self-motivated and the ability to work independently. Possess excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills. Excellent communication, presentation, and counseling skills.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in Food Sciences or Nutrition or Exercise Physiology. Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred or encouraged within one year of hire. Specific work experience and knowledge as a Sports Dietitian with NCAA Division 1 athletics strongly preferred.
