Posting Summary
The Managing Director will manage: all Center for Community News (CCN) staff, consultants and interns; budget and administrative details; communications and outreach strategy and execution; research and programming strategy and execution; development and fundraising strategy and execution. Ensure that all four pillars of CCN’s Impact Strategy (Research & Report, Organize & Connect, Seed & Grow, Sustain) are working in coordination and advancing to meet the organization’s 5-year target metrics, within CCN’s $7M/5-year budget constraints.
The Managing Director will serve as a public-facing spokesperson and advocate for the Center for Community News as a national leader in the advancement of news-academic partnerships; maintaining a strong presence in the fields of higher education, journalism and civic engagement on behalf of the University of Vermont and in service of its land-grant mission.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Master’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Theory or related field. At least 5 years of relevant professional work experience such as public policy, strategic communications, and/or journalism. Professional writing experience in national publications related to journalism and higher education. Supervisory experience.
Requires long-term strategic thinking, tactical and operational work, workforce management, and confidence in public speaking and writing.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience in:
  • Higher education
  • Journalism specifically at regional or national media outlet
  • Civics or public administration; demonstrated passion for civic engagement and a thriving free press.
Anticipated Pay Range
$87,000-$100,000
Other Information
Actual hiring pay dependent on current competitor market conditions, comparable campus peer(s) at time of hire, and candidate’s experience level and length.
This position is wholly supported by external funds through June 30, 2029.
