Job Summary
:

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine (SOM) is currently seeking applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track basic sciences core faculty position. The ideal candidate will have a history of teaching excellence in medical education and the leadership skills to serve as core faculty in basic science courses in phases 1, 2 and/or 3. The selected candidate will provide instruction in basic science courses across multiple disciplines including Microbiology and serve as facilitator for small group discussion in case-based learning, problem-based learning, and other small group sessions. In addition, this position will collaborate with clinical and basic science faculty for the development of clinical cases to emphasize basic science curriculum and will participate in the development and review of exams and evaluation of learning outcomes.

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:

phase 1: medical students

  • Develop the goals, learning objectives, pre-work assignments, pre- and post-test questions and any supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 1 sequence (may identify faculty from other colleges to collaborate).
  • Develop cases for the case-based curriculum.
  • Run large group sessions and facilitate case-based learning sessions in years 1 and 2.
  • Participate in clinical correlations and illustrate where there is vertical integration of the basic science materials.
  • Routinely teach and model professionalism and ethics.
  • Other activities may include:
    • Social gatherings (some of these may occur during evenings)
    • Provide a base of support
    • Assist students with academic issues as they occur
    • Read students’ reflections and provide feedback
    • Assist with students’ independent investigative inquiry questions
    • Attend White Coat Ceremony in the fall

phase 2: medical students

  • Provide support, guidance, and mentoring to each student during their clerkship year as needed.
  • Review reflections/experiences of students.

phase 3: medical students

  • Continue to provide a mentoring relationship.
  • Review and edit students’ personal statements as requested.
  • Write letter of support for residency application as requested.
  • Attend post-Match Party in March and Medical School Graduation in May

general

  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Work on projects within at least one working group such as OSCE case development; communication skills; write-up, oral case presentation and clinical reasoning; professionalism and ethics; mentoring; feedback and evaluation.
  • Participate in and facilitate academic faculty development sessions and retreats (which occur periodically throughout the year) as needed.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  • Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task.
  • The ability to interact with both staff and faculty, at all levels, is crucial to this role.
  • The ability to work resourcefully and efficiently in terms of time management, with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and autonomy, is also imperative.
Qualifications


Required Education / Experience:

  • A terminal doctoral degree MD/DO or PhD in basic science disciplines, such as Microbiology and Immunology, or related field is required. Including the flexibility to teach across multiple disciplines, expertise in the use of technology and active learning instruction.
  • Three (3) years of relevant teaching experience in medical education; prior experience teaching in a medical school curriculum; and experience teaching Immunology is highly desirable.
