General Notes

The Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease was established in 2018 to serve patients and families that have experienced or are living with a cardiovascular diagnosis. Our heart center aspires to create a journey for patients and families that is anchored on the principles of human-centered design, value-based care, and health equity.

The Service Designer will work with clinicians and health care transformation researchers as part of the Health Transformation and Design Program at the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a collaboration between Dell Children's Medical Center and UT Health Austin, the clinical arm of Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin.

Purpose

This position will support Heart Center operations and research leadership to provide centralized expertise in process improvement, change management, and data analysis to support new and ongoing projects vital to the ongoing operations and continuous improvement of the clinical and research initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and interact with patients, families, and members of the Heart Center at various touch points throughout the patient, family, and other stakeholder's experience, identifying problem areas through key performance indicators, and proposing changes and improvements to the service experience.

  • Apply service design methods in multidisciplinary teams to reimagine how inpatient and outpatient congenital cardiac care is delivered. Produce service design tools including service blueprints, journey maps, and digital and environmental prototypes. Contribute to and potentially lead projects with systems design needs.

  • Efficiently prototype services and solutions in dynamic environments, adapting to changing needs. Define, build, iterate and execute project plans with systems design activities and deliverables

  • Partner collaboratively with diverse internal and external partners to establish and deliver on shared goals.

  • Measure project results and outcomes in a meaningful, clear, and innovative manner. Create metrics and methods for measuring progress and success - before, during and after projects

  • Share what we make and how we make it at conferences, in scientific manuscripts, via blog posts and case studies, and through other channels in collaboration with other members of the Heart Center

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 4 years, or Master's degree and 2 years of professional experience designing large-scale services using service design methods, preferably in the health care field. Experience collaborating on multidisciplinary teams. Flexibility and openness to adapting service design methods to fit the needs of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to prototype in different media across digital and physical channels; Ability to zoom in and out on an engagement and at times potentially between multiple engagements; Ability to focus on small details and to understanding large system relationships. Adept at working with actively engaged partners; Ability to convey the value of design. Mutually respectful approach to collaboration; Passion for leveraging design to help patients and families as part of a unique program; Detail-oriented, excellent record keeping, and organization skills with strong follow-through and accountability.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Health care experience, specifically: pediatric and congenital heart disease value-based health care delivery models and relevant metrics such as patient-reported outcome measures. Project management or change management experience in clinical settings. Experience in process improvement, change management, and data analysis design research techniques is expected, but the role is that of a service designer. Visual design skills are strongly desired to help effectively communicate concepts and prototypes. The ideal candidate will bring knowledge of healthcare and communities to tackle the important challenges addressing social drivers of health.

Salary Range

$85,000 depending on qualifications
