PURPOSE:

Oversees protocol review functions of the IACUC.Works independently to manage an efficient review process from protocol submission to outcome.Maintains meticulous documentation of all committee business.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates review of all protocols from submission through final resolution.Serves as point of contact for reviewers and laboratory members to provide a smooth review process.Works with researchers to develop complete, accurate protocols and procedures for IACUC review. Works with reviewers and other IACUC staff to complete post meeting correspondence and evaluate investigator responses to IACUC review for clarity.

  • Conducts detailed pre-review analysis of incoming protocols by analyzing research applications, utilizing independent judgment, and conducting in-depth review to ensure IACUC submissions are complete and ready for review by committee members.Corresponds with investigators and research personnel to, resolve any identified issues.Works with reviewers to determine final protocol status. Reviews and approves amendments that qualify for administrative review.

  • Reviews IACUC protocols for congruence with associated funding proposals and prepares and sends letters independently.

  • Ensures that protocols are reviewed in a timely manner.Monitors expiring protocols and works with the laboratories to ensure no lapse in approval.

  • Provides guidance and support related to IACUC functions to the animal research community. Supports committee functions such as attending full-committee review meetings, program reviews, and inspections. Provides timely and accurate IACUC correspondence and written reports. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of state and federal regulations related to laboratory animal care and use.

  • Cross-trains with other IACUC roles to serve as a back-up.In assigned area of responsibility, reviews operating procedures for efficiency and effectiveness, makes minor changes or recommends major changes for improvements.Engages in planning and decisions related to new or changed procedures.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of experience working in research with animals or in a research compliance area.

  • Ability to plan and carry out responsibilities independently.

  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures to solve unusual and/or difficult problems.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with university administrators, faculty, post docs and students in a collegial manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to present written information, ideas, and concepts in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Effective planning and organizational skills.

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects.

  • Experience using computer applications.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience conducting animal research or in research compliance related to animal research.

  • Demonstrated experience writing guidelines, standard operating procedures, and training materials.

  • The position requires a flexible individual who has experience in animal research, can learn specific program functions quickly, is highly skilled in interpersonal relationships, is demonstrably skilled in professional oral and written communication, and is able to deal effectively with high volumes, rigid deadlines, and frequent changes.

SALARY RANGE:

$65,000 depending on qualifications

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished)

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

  • Occasional interstate, intrastate and international travel
