Purpose

Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, as well as by other departmental Professional Engineers, assume primary responsibility for supporting all UEM working groups in an electrical engineering capacity. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies UEM and industry standards and/or complex engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications to UEM systems.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct field investigations, inspect and monitor projects to ensure legal and code compliance of specifications by reviewing work completed by contractors for accuracy and recommends approval of contract changes
  • Maintain, update, and create specifications, and prepare design criteria for assigned projects in the appropriate discipline
  • Manage and coordinate special projects, leads a design team in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, schedules, estimates, budgets, detail final construction plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements. Oversees project progress from design through construction and commissioning.
  • Perform equipment and process evaluations to ensure valid results. Troubleshoots and assess existing systems and make recommendations for improvements/corrections.
  • Prepares contract documents, technical specifications and plans. Prepares and monitors project and program schedules and budgets. Prepares progress and final reports and estimates.
  • Provides information to campus customers by contacts of personnel to include inter and intra-departmental administrative, engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions, and respond to inquiries.
  • Responsible for progressively complex projects by preparing cost estimates and engineering and feasibility reports and studies, projects, and assigned programs.
  • Under the supervision of one or more Professional Engineer(s), review/develop plans, permits, and development proposals. Scope shall include preliminary and final designs and/or design criteria for assigned projects.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned. Attend staff meetings, safety training and meetings. Complete plant operation and maintenance training courses. Required to carry University issued cell phone during work and on-call hours.
Required Qualifications

Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to engineering. Four (4) years of experience in a field related to the job. A passing score on Texas Fundamentals of Engineering or other NSPE/TSPE reciprocity-approved testing entity, or ability to earn a passing score within twelve (12) months. Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong technical skills. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various constituents and workforce. Ability to identify and solve problems, think critically, and create solutions. Ability to adapt to change and quickly learn new technologies and processes.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Eight (8) years of experience in a field related to the job. Ability to obtain PE within one year. Experience with utility systems and equipment. Experience with project management and budget development. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations to non-technical audiences. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Experience with building systems and equipment. Experience with national standards such as ASHRAE and IECC. Experience in the development or review of construction standards or codes. Experience in developing workflows or processes. Experience in educational, research and/or healthcare facilities, infrastructure, or systems. Experience in energy and water conservation programs.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
