Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina invites applications for one full-time, professional track instructor position in the Department of Theatre and Dance to begin January 2022. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
The Costume Shop Supervisor is responsible for the technical execution of the costumes for department productions; the supervision of undergraduate students assigned in the costume laboratory course; supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other employees, working in the Costume Shop. This position provides essential administrative support for Costume Shop operations.
Responsibilities include teaching a 2/2 course load per semester, supervising and participating in costume construction, and managing Costume Shop operations under the direction of the Chair and the senior tenure-track Costume Design Professor. Support for costume shop operations includes, but is not limited to, coordinating, scheduling and supervising of costume fittings, ordering and maintaining material supplies, equipment, facilities and our expansive collection of costumes. Hiring and supervision of staff to meet production needs is also a duty of this position.
Courses normally assigned include, but are not limited to, THEA 123: Costume Studio Lab, THEA 252: Costume Construction for the Stage, THEA 552: Stage Costume Drafting and Drawing, THEA 558: Draping for Modern Silhouette, THEA 599: Period Patterning, and THEA 599: Costume Construction for the Performer.
Required Education and Experience
MFA in Theatre Costume Design/Technology or commensurate professional costume experience. Essential understanding of historical/ period costume, pattern development, drafting, draping, cutting, stitching and tailoring techniques. Applicants must have experience working with guest artists and actors, proven managerial skills, adeptness working with student/ non-professional design/technical crews, and the ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment. Experience working in high stress environment with multiple projects and the ability to work within budget or financial guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as costume shop supervisor at the collegiate or professional level. Expertise in fiscal, and personnel management.
