University of Redlands is Hiring a Community Coordinator Near Redlands, CA

POSITION CODE: 7103/7104

DEPARTMENT/ADMINISTRATION: Residence Life and Housing

APPOINTMENT: Staff, 25 hours/week, Ten (10) Months

SALARY RANGE: $16.00

INTRODUCTORY PERIOD: 6 months

Definition of Classification:

The Community Coordinator is a member of the University of Redlands Residence Life and Housing staff who has a responsibility for the direct oversight of a residential building or community and supervision of undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs). The position is responsible for creating and maintaining a sense of community within their assigned residential environment conducive to engagement, growth, learning, and meaningful interpersonal relationships.

Reporting to the Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing, this position supports the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of housing and residential communities including but not limited to student staff training and supervision, facilities management, administration of the student conduct process within the halls, participation in the Administrator-on-call duty rotation, and response to crises when appropriate.

Special Conditions: The position is a 10-month live-in position in a semi-furnished rent-free apartment. Incumbents are expected to take an active role in the continued development of the Residence Life program. Incumbents should be a visible and approachable campus presence, available for group and individual mediation and follow-up on personal, academic, medical, and social issues.

This position requires flexible working hours, which will include working some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Community Oversight

  • Direct oversight of 2 to 4 of our Residence Hall communities (approximately 400 students).
  • Supervision of a Resident Assistant (RA) team of 6-10 staff members; weekly individual and team meetings; conducting annual performance evaluations; aiding in the development of interpersonal relationships, social interactions, community and community cohesiveness between staff, residents, and other University constituents.

Department Responsibilities

  • Attends, instructs, and actively takes part in all scheduled trainings in July, August, and January.
  • Conducts weekly staff meetings and monthly in-services Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm to address concerns, plan upcoming events, provide professional development, etc.
  • Advises 1-2 RA collateral assignments: RA Recruitment & Selection, RA Training & Inservice, Recognition & Spirit, Communications & Social Media, or RA Council & Community Liaisons. 
  • Assists in the organization and development of RA selection and actively participates in the selection process.

Community Building

  • Develops strong interpersonal relationships, social interactions, and community cohesiveness within RA staff, residents of assigned communities, and University students as a whole.
  • Attends and plans community meetings and events. 
  • Meets with students individually in both formal and informal settings to build relationships and assess needs.
  • Creates bonding and team development opportunities for community staff.
  • Identifies students with personal, behavioral, or developmental concerns. 
  • Increases student engagement through collaboration efforts between the offices throughout the Division of Student Affairs and the University as a whole.

Housing Operations

  • Supports housing operations including but not limited to coordinating check-in/out, room checks, roommate mediations, and managing facilities requests.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Management, Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and other departments associated with the maintenance of the residence halls and student safety.
  • Assists with the advertisement and process implementation of Room Draw.

Student Development

  • Adjudicates student conduct cases as delegated by the Director of Community Standards and Residence Life and Housing professional staff and assists in enforcing the Code of Community Standards. 
  • Serves as a role model on how to engage, interact, and nurture positive interactions with first-year/upper-class students.
  • Serve as a Responsible Employee in compliance with University and federal Title IX guidelines. 

Crisis/Emergency/Risk Management

  • Participates in the Administrator's on-call duty rotation. 
  • Carries the on-call phone on a rotating weekly basis (including evening, weekend, holiday, and University breaks).
  • Serves as a backup to the RA on duty.
  • Makes decisions in emergencies about safety, medical, and security concerns, and alerts the backup Administrator on-call when warranted.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attends all department and division of student affairs staff meetings.
  • Serves on University committees as needed.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).

Preferred

  • Acceptance/enrollment in a graduate program in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Counseling, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • General knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of program management.
  • Principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Adaptable to change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with and be sensitive to the traditional college-age student.
  • Ability to advise staff.
  • Ability to develop and implement programs and produce effective outcomes.
  • Work effectively both individually and with groups.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to give presentations and interact with diverse populations.
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other applications.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • High level of skill in making responsible, informed decisions in the moment.
  • Ability to supervise, develop, and mentor.
  • Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Working Conditions:

Standard office. Duties performed are in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. The position requires working some evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk on a regular basis; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; read fine print and operate a computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: The anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with the candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity and relevant qualifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
