University of Pikeville is Hiring an Operations Lieutenant and Training Coordinator for Public Safety Near Pikeville, KY

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) seeks a dynamic, dedicated, and creative professional interested in providing a campus community where individuals can thrive, feel safe and secure, and have the opportunity to feel supported. In collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Public Safety provides a vital support function to the campus community. This position requires extensive interaction with all members of the campus community. The Division of Student Affairs and Department of Public Safety has developed a holistic approach to providing a safe campus.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Supervision:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate a team of public safety officers.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in the execution of departmental policies, procedures, and protocols. 
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, training sessions, and performance evaluations. 
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and professional development. 
  • Serves as Mid Shift Supervisor. 
  • Serves on the Public Safety Leadership Team.

Campus Safety Operations:

  •  Oversee and participate in proactive patrols of the campus to prevent and deter criminal activity.
  •  Conduct regular inspections and audits of equipment, vehicles, and facilities to maintain operational readiness and compliance with safety standards.
  •  Monitor campus surveillance systems and respond to security alarms and incidents. 
  •  Conduct investigations into security breaches, thefts, vandalism, and other campus incidents.

Community Engagement:

  • Serve as a resource and point of contact for safety-related inquiries, concerns, and reports from the campus community.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to address safety concerns, implement crime prevention initiatives, and promote a culture of safety awareness.
  • Conduct educational programs and outreach activities on personal safety, campus security, and emergency preparedness.

 Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to incidents, reports, and investigations.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and statistical analyses on campus crime and safety trends.
  • Assist in Managing departmental equipment, and resources effectively and efficiently.

Crisis Response and Negotiation:

  • Provide expertise and leadership in crisis response and negotiation during critical incidents, including hostage situations, barricaded subjects, suicidal individuals, and other high-risk scenarios.
  • Develop and implement crisis response plans and protocols in collaboration with campus partners, local authorities, and emergency responders.
  • Conduct threat assessments and risk analyses to identify potential crises and develop proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Serve as a primary negotiator in crises, utilizing effective communication, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution skills to achieve peaceful resolutions.

Training Development and Administration:

  •  Design and develop training curricula, materials, and resources tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the university campus environment.
  •  Collaborate with subject matter experts, departmental leaders, and external partners to incorporate best practices, emerging trends, and relevant case studies into training content.
  •  Continuously review and update training materials to reflect changes in policies, procedures, regulations, and industry standards.
  •  Design and develop training curricula, materials, and resources tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the university campus environment.
  •  Collaborate with subject matter experts, departmental leaders, and external partners to incorporate best practices, emerging trends, and relevant case studies into training content.
  •  Continuously review and update training materials to reflect changes in policies, procedures, regulations, and industry standards.
  •  Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, public administration, education, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  •  Must be able to pass a thorough background check.
  •  7-10 years of Law Enforcement, Corrections, or Security experience.
  •  Crisis Negotiation Training
  •  Train the Trainer or Instructor Level training
  •  Successful Completion of FLETC or equivalent training
  •  Must possess a valid driver's license.
