Job Description
Established by Israel Abrahams and Claude Montefiore in 1889, The Jewish Quarterly Review is the oldest English-language journal in the field of Jewish studies. JQR preserves the attention to textual detail so characteristic of the journal's early years, while encouraging scholarship in a wide range of fields and time periods. In each quarterly issue of JQR the ancient stands alongside the modern, the historical alongside the literary, the textual alongside the contextual. JQR is now housed at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and published by Penn Press.
DUTIES:
The Jewish Quarterly Review seeks a part-time temporary Journal Administrator that will report to the Executive Editor, JQR; Klatt Family Director for Public Programs. This position will support manuscript submission, review, editing, publication, and archiving, as well as other administrative aspects of running a peer-reviewed academic journal in the humanities. The Journal Administrator will carry out needed communications and organizational tasks on a day-to-day basis while organizing processes over the longer term as well. They will work closely with the Executive Editor to ensure the smooth, timely, and accurate handling of information and manuscripts. The role requires approximately twenty hours per week. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Specific responsibilities include:
Implementing the peer review process from submission to decision, communicating with authors, reviewers, and editors about article status and notifying/reminding them of needed actions. A major component of this is inviting, reminding, and acknowledging peer reviewers under the direction of the editors. It also includes checking submissions for adherence to the journal's specs, troubleshooting use of the on line submissions portal, and keeping some records outside of the on line system.
Handling and tracking key documents through the stages of editing, proofs, and publication. This includes managing versions of accepted articles and communicating details of process and time line for author agreements, electronic sharing, and more.
Maintaining journal records, including but not limited to contacts and submissions/publication data, and create reports on request.
Other tasks related to the administration of the journal as assigned by the editors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's degree and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, along with outstanding attention to detail and organizational ability It is essential that the person in this position can work independently and balance multiple simultaneous projects in a timely manner. Familiarity with Microsoft Office is required and some experience with data management (in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or similar, and in FileMaker) is preferred. We strongly prefer a candidate with some experience in the humanities in a postgraduate setting, with knowledge of academic mores and familiarity with scholarly modes of writing and citation. The Jewish Quarterly Review is housed at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia; remote workers will be considered for this role.
