Job Description
The Executive Director of Research Operations will ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness across all facets of GTP's research enterprise involving the care and use of laboratory animals in discovery, translational, and nonclinical safety research. Key roles and responsibilities include:
Operational Management and Strategic Leadership: Serve as a member of GTP's executive leadership team to ensure the highest level of efficiency within the organization. Engage internal and external leaders and key stakeholders to implement high quality animal care programs within GTP. Collaborate with GTP's scientific and core leaders to define critical laboratory workflows and integrate required resources and services to ensure goals and deliverables are met. Promote transparency and collaboration throughout the organization. Define and deliver metrics and key performance indicators to drive continuous success or improvement.
Leadership to the Program in Comparative Medicine (PCM): Direct and maintain a high-quality animal care and use program that optimally supports the scientific and departmental goals of GTP. Lead operations for GTP's complex research programs performed across multiple research sites consisting of ~150,000 NSF of animal housing and support space maintained as a satellite institution at University of Pennsylvania. Direct a team of 50 staff members that manage all aspects of animal husbandry; animal procurement; transgenic colony maintenance; veterinary care; in vivo research support; regulatory compliance; and satellite animal facility operations.
Performance Management: Develop a strategic vision and set the direction for staff to accomplish departmental goals and objectives. Drive high performance within the PCM. Identify and direct the implementation of training and development programs. Provide mentoring tools for all staff within PCM. Manage staff performance including coaching and evaluation. Maintain a high level of teamwork and morale within PCM. Review and approve capacity planning metrics and identify and recruit staff as needed.
Scientific Leadership and Resource Management: Provide technical expertise in veterinary care, animal husbandry, and research services. Ensures research support to GTP Scientists. Oversee all aspects of facility management to include programmatic review, space planning, facility design, and development.
Finance: Responsible for fiscal management of the PCM to include per diem and fee analysis for husbandry and research support. Review and approve major budgetary and resource allocations. Optimize organizational efficiencies and advocate for resources (i.e., staff, facilities, equipment) required for effective operation of the PCM.
Regulatory Compliance: Apply knowledge and assure compliance for all local, state, and federal regulations for animal care and welfare, including but not limited to USDA, AAALAC, OLAW and FDA (Good Laboratory Practice).
Veterinary Care: Provide oversight to small and large animal veterinary medical programs including diagnosis and treatment of diseases; preventive medicine programs; surgical services; and animal procurement and transportation.
Effective Communication: Assure communication, develop partnerships, and facilitate teamwork within GTP's animal care and use program, including but not limited to interactions with the University Laboratory Animal Resources; Office of Animal Welfare; Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; Research Cores within GTP; Laboratory Operations; Occupational Medicine; Industry Regulators; and Environmental Health and Safety services.
