Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides psychological services to all students enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill who have paid the student health fee. The psychological/counseling services provide individual, couples, and group therapy, same day triage appointments, crisis intervention, outreach services and medication evaluation and management. The team also provides risk assessment evaluation for the Dean of Students office.
Campus Health Services and CAPS is a unique health care entity and position duties do not necessarily compare to an academic department or other service units of the University. We face many challenges associated with healthcare delivery that most job descriptions do not address, including Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) accreditation, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance, CPT and ICD-9 coding, billing, electronic health record, and electronic insurance filing.
Position Summary
The Counseling and Psychological Services Psychologist is a professional licensed or license eligible to practice psychology in the State of North Carolina and is expected to carry out this practice in an ethical and informed manner within the administrative framework of Campus Health Services. The licensed psychologist provides individual and group therapy and assessment; supervision and training of psychology practicum students and interns; outreach programming; and crisis intervention, including daytime and evening weekend on-call services. Consultation with members of the University community and participation on counseling related campus committees is also encouraged and expected as indicated. The psychologist plays an important role in health education, especially through individual contacts with student clientele.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant professional degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and licensure in the appropriate clinical field of psychology, social work, or mental health practice.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Board eligibility for licensure by the North Carolina Board of Psychology. Board certification is expected. Psychologists who have just completed their internship will be given adequate time to convert from board eligible to board certified.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge, skills and attitude: -Have a current knowledge in depth of his her field and its standards of practice. -Have a commitment to the practice of quality mental health services including a commitment to human value in that practice. -Have a special interest in the university setting and the processes of maturation which occur during college years, undergraduate and graduate. -Have an ability to work with other professional staff and support staff to produce integrated professional services. Prefer individual who has experience with risk threat assessment and experience providing mental health care in a college or university setting.
