Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
This position serves as a Research Associate reporting to the Director of the Center for Environmental Modeling for Policy Development, within the Institute for the Environment. The Research Associate – Remote Sensing Specialist will develop estimates of air pollution using data from remote sensing instruments – both current and emerging, and use economic indicators to assess costs and benefits of emissions control measures for air quality management.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Advanced degree in a discipline related to the field of geography, atmospheric sciences and climate sciences.
  • 3 years of required and 5 years of preferred related training or experience with a focus on using satellite data products, low cost sensors and model datasets for air quality assessments, or combination of training and experience necessary to perform the work.
  • Experience and proficiency with processing air quality data from satellite data products such as SENTINEL, OMI, TROPOMI, etc. for both aerosols and NO2, and modeling outputs such as COPERNICUS, etc.
  • Experience with processing data from low cost sensors and creating dashboards for assessing spatio-temporal distributions of observed data
  • Experience in working with large-scale datasets and remote sensing observations from multiple satellites
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Proficiency in statistical methods for analyses of large-scale observations and modeled datasets
  • Proficiency in R, Shiny, Python, Raspberry, Javascript, HTML
  • Experience in working with large-scale datasets and remote sensing observations from multiple satellites
