Be a Tar Heel!Primary Purpose Of Organizational UnitThe Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 115 Adjuncts, 19 EHRA Non-Faculty, 15 Postdocs, 34 SHRA (Staff), 44 SHRA Temporary and 202 Students. The department’s operating budget is 27 million a year.
Position SummaryThe person to fill this position will be part of a team performing highly relevant translational research whose ultimate goal is to develop broadly active antiviral therapies. We aim to develop antivirals against coronavirus that we know about today and those that emerge in the future. The candidate will interact with both academic and industrial partners to achieve our goals. We are seeking candidates with extensive immunological, virological and/or molecular biology experience who can drive their own experiments in the lab. The Department of Epidemiology lab uses emerging coronaviruses as models to study the genetics of RNA virus transcription, replication, persistence, pathogenesis, genetics, and cross-species transmission as well as translational countermeasures.
Minimum Education And Experience RequirementsPhD with completed degree in Virology, Immunology and/or Microbiology required
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperienceCell culture expertise required
Expertise in use of mouse models required
Excellent molecular biology skills required (i.e. experience with E. coli culture and DNA extraction, restriction digestions, PCR , DNA fragment purification, ligations, and eukaryotic cell transfections, DNA and RNA quantitation, RNA extractions)
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperienceSuccessful candidate will have a basic understanding of rules and regulations required for working at biosafety levels 2 and 3
Moderate to Extensive flow cytometry expertise preferred
BSL3 Experience Is a Plus But Not RequiredWillingness to work at BSL3 is required after proper training
