Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems, improve lives. The School’s curriculum supports the mission and recognizes the uniqueness of the region served, including concerns for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families and communities. Classes provide rigorous and evidence-based content, and give students the opportunity to explore theory, learn intervention skills and engage in challenging dialogue with colleagues.
Position Summary
The School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for two (2) open rank, tenure track positions focused on mental health, health equity, and individual and family well-being. Consistent with the School of Social Work’s mission to advance equity, transform systems, and improve lives, we seek applicants with a demonstrated capacity to conduct rigorous research focused on informing, designing, developing, implementing, and/or evaluating interventions or policies. Successful applicants will join a community of active scholars with a vision to be the leading school of social work for accelerating discovery and the translation of knowledge into action. Candidates will be expected to engage in all aspects of faculty life: research, teaching, and service and must have the capacity to obtain external funding to support their work.
Both positions’ academic home will be in the School of Social Work where the candidates will join a community of active scholars engaged in research in the areas of mental health, equity, and well-being. One (1) of these faculty positions will be eligible for a secondary appointment in the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry to directly engage in research priorities of the recently established UNC Suicide Prevention Institute. The candidate will be expected to participate in a group of researchers and practitioners that includes faculty members from medicine, social work, education, psychology, public health, and others. Successful applicants for this position will have an active research portfolio consistent with the mission of the Suicide Prevention Institute and will collaborate closely with this interdisciplinary team to apply emerging and novel methodology to the understanding and prevention of suicide. This candidate will report to the Dean of the School of Social Work but receive ongoing mentorship and research support from the director of the UNC Suicide Prevention Institute.
The selected candidate for the second, open rank tenure track faculty position will be encouraged to engage with social work students and practicing social workers to promote practice-based research in the areas of mental health, health equity, and individual and family well-being.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. These nine-month faculty positions are available July 1, 2024.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A master’s degree in social work or related field and a PhD in social work or related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years’ post-MSW practice experience and who have demonstrated experience working with interdisciplinary research teams with track records of external funding. We seek a pool of applicants with varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who wish to join an academic community that places the highest value on rigorous, applied, and transformative scholarship.
