Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training, and outreach.
UNC Lineberger’s Clinical Protocol Office (CPO) is a centralized resource that supports the clinical research efforts of Lineberger investigators, primarily through the design and conduct of therapeutic clinical trials. The Protocol Office provides administrative, regulatory, data management, and study coordination services to investigators throughout the development, approval, and implementation processes of protocols conducted at UNC and its affiliate institutions. The Protocol Office is responsible for protecting the safety of patients participating in research, ensuring the quality of the research, and safeguarding the interests of the University. It also furnishes protocol-related information to health professionals and to the community at large.

Position Summary

This position is assigned to Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Clinical Protocol Office and performs the following:

  • Review and negotiate complex clinical trial budgets and payment term arrangements for clinical research funding from industry sponsors, as well as federal and not-for profit sponsors. This may include pharmaceutical companies, Contract Research Organizations (CRO), outside cancer centers and universities, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
  • Consult with faculty Investigators and staff regarding the nature of each clinical trial and the impact of the requirements contained in the protocols, manuals and other study documents to ensure budget and overall agreement are both accurate and comply with all regulations.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in research administration policies and requirements in order to serve as an up-to-date source of information, guidance, and training for the campus and research community. Work with UNC Office of Clinical Trials (OCT) and Office of Industry Contracts (OIC) to remain current on University policy, external regulations and guidance including CMS, NCI and all other relevant policy
  • Monitor cross-functional hand-offs to ensure study activation timelines remain on track while sharing key information with stakeholders throughout process
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Entry-level with Masters; or Bachelors and 0-2 yrs experience

Working knowledge of budgets.

Demonstrated ability to independently negotiate and communicate effectively, efficiently and diplomatically, both orally and in writing.

Ability to multi-task, and prioritize high-volume workload with minimal supervision while maintaining a positive and collaborative approach

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external offices and individuals.

Flexibility, a ‘can-do’ mindset, and the ability to function in an entrepreneurial research setting are essential

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Knowledge and appreciation of University structure, practices, policies and procedures
Demonstrated experience in a clinical trial setting with industry sponsors and/or with negotiation of a variety of industry funded clinical agreements
Self-directed with sound judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.
Team player with ability to work independently, prudently, and collaboratively
Master’s degree preferred
UNC experience preferred
