Position Summary
The Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in association with UNC Health and Chatham Hospital seeks a Family Physician with broad interests for an exciting position. Clinical time will be focused in staffing the Emergency Department of a teaching hospital located 30 miles outside of Chapel Hill. Chatham Hospital is a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital located in Siler City. Consultative services include general surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, and gynecology.
This is an amazing opportunity to join an academically diverse and energetic group of Family Physicians engaged in the important work of providing ED care to a rural population while training the next generation of care givers in an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment. We teach UNC medical students, PA students, and Family Medicine residents. The ED team is supported by midlevel providers. Additional clinical support is provided by the UNC telephone consult service, tele-psych service, on-site interpreter services, and UNC AirCare. We use EPIC as our EHR, and most of our patient transfers are to the UNC main campus.

As a Faculty Physician/Clinician Educator you will be an integral part of our department’s success. Our team members advance the tripartite mission of the UNC School of Medicine, including excellent patient care, superior teaching, and impactful research. We support our faculty with professional development opportunities in the department, in the institution, and nationally. Each faculty member is supported by a mentoring subcommittee that helps build the framework to a successful career, including career planning, counseling around career goals, and regular review of academic activities, all tailored to individual professional and personal goals. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Clinical: The clinical responsibilities will include the full scope of ED patient care for general medical, pediatric, and surgical patients. Advanced airway management skills are essential.
  • Teaching & Education: Our department cultivates a diverse and inclusive teaching environment. Like all other faculty in the department, the person in this position will fulfill the institution’s teaching mission and will teach and mentor medical students, interns, residents, fellows, and other learners in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Research: All faculty are encouraged to develop a scholarly interest. Clinical faculty are expected to produce a scholarly product, which may include national presentations and should include manuscript submission, at a rate of one every one or two years.
  • Supervision: This position likely will involve supervision of UNC medical students and Family Medicine residents.
  • Institutional Citizenship: All faculty are expected to work as part of the larger team to improve access, reduce cost, improve quality, and promote efficiency and better health outcomes. You may be asked to engage in community outreach and attend professional events to assist with program development and building professional relationships. In addition, attention to timely and complete documentation and patient satisfaction is expected.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
MD or DO required. Candidates must be board eligible or board certified in Family Medicine. Continuous certification in ACLS, PALS and ATLS will be required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Fellowship training and/or an advanced degree (e.g. MPH) is highly desirable, but not mandatory. Clinical experience in an emergency department setting, urgent care, rural practice or teaching experience is preferred, but not required.
