Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Bridging knowledge and expertise at UNC Gillings, the mission of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH) is to facilitate collaborative solutions to population health challenges in N.C. and beyond. NCIPH uses the expertise of our staff, partners and the UNC Gillings community to transform organizations, develop leaders, translate data to action and build capacity in order to improve population health. We envision a North Carolina where all communities are thriving and healthy.
Position Summary
The purpose of the Community Hub Coordinator role is to advance the work of the Public Health Partnership Hubs (Hub) in Cumberland, Durham, Halifax, and Jackson counties. The Hubs were developed as a key initiative from the 2022 – 2028 Gillings Practice Strategic Plan. The goal of these Hubs is to create centers of high intensity engagement between Gillings and a small number of geographically based partner communities across North Carolina. Hubs work via their respective health departments and community groups on their community priorities to improve the public’s health and address health inequities. Gillings and the Hubs will collaborate deeply and over time, involving many of the groups, organizations and domains that impact vital conditions of health to make a measurable difference in health outcomes and equity through these efforts.

For each Hub, a Community Hub Coordinator (CHC) will serve as an intermediary between UNC Gillings, the health department and a platform of Hub community partners and will be physically embedded within the community. The purpose of the role is to provide community development, serving first to create the program and then ensuring its smooth operation while providing a welcoming environment for all users. The position will be required to support members of the public attending hub sessions, building relationships and trust, and understand community issues. To be successful, the Community Hub Coordinator will independently identify key stakeholders, immersing themselves into the community, ensuring that they are well versed on community dynamics and able to provide support to the community as they are forming connections with Gillings. They will need to develop a strategy based on the feedback they receive from public entities, community organizations and other providers. Once the goals of the project are determined, the coordinator will inform programming and measure success, reporting back regularly. They will also be charged with identifying funding sources to support community and HUB activities. As a result, they will need to develop into a subject matter expert for their respective community needs, resources and gaps in identifying both opportunities to expand partnerships and to identify other resources to enhance offerings.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Demonstrated community engagement, partnership development, and interprofessional practice experience.
  • Ability to work with diverse communities in a culturally humble manner.
  • Ability to effectively present ideas in writing and through oral communication to individuals and groups, ensuring that they understand the information.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and self-management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to problem solve with diverse constituents and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Teams, and Qualtrics proficient.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Substantial knowledge of Cumberland, Durham, Halifax or Jackson county.
  • Master’s degree in public health strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish skills desired
  • Prior experience working within local public health agencies and organizations (e.g., health departments, community health clinics, community-based organizations).
  • Experience with program evaluation or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Experience with community-based public health research.
  • Grant writing experience.
